Hi, I currently have a 2008 Honda civic. Recently I have been having issues with the battery holding a charge and idling very low. After jumping it this evening it was maintaing a good idle speed while in park but as soon as I put it in drive the rpms dropped and it was struggling just to keep from stalling. After a few minutes of letting the engine heat up i heard a hissing sound then a loud pop followed by more hissing and smoke from under the hood. The appeard to be liquid in the bottom of the front right hand portion of the engine floor but I'm not sure what liquid it was Mechanic's Assistant: How old is the battery? And have you tested it with a voltmeter? The battery is probably a little under a year old. I took it into mechanic bc of the battery issue and the low idle speed about a month ago. They said the battery and alternator tested well and could find any evidence of a vampire wire. The also did an engine restore and replaced a spark plug Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Civic yourself? What have you tried so far? I'm not very mechanically gifted, so I normally take it into a mechanics if its not something pretty basic and I know what the problem is Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Thats it

Thank you Graham. So the issue is the battery loses charge overnight? Have you tried to load test the battery using a battery tester? Would you like a test to help pinpoint a battery draw on the vehicle?

I took it into a mechanic and they said both the battery and alternator were fine and they couldn't find any unusual power draws. And while they didn't specifically fix anything electrical it seemed to start working fine until today. Also while the battery is a nuisance I'm more worried about the loud pop, hissing, and smoke coming from under the hood
Automotive Expert
I could certainly send you a test if you would like for the battery draw. Just let me know. However if you're more concerned about the loud popping and hissing noise under the hood I would need to know where it's coming from

Well there was liquid pooled by the front right hand side of the hood, slightly behind the headlight, [radiator](/topics-radiator-honda/) etc by a set of belts. This also seemed to be the source of smoke. While I didn't see the actual leak I saw the liquid
Automotive Expert
Do you think this is engine oil or coolant that is possibly leaking? What color is the liquid?

I'm not entirely sure. It was dark out and snow on the ground. I want to say probably coolant. It smelled but not quite as bad as burning oil
Automotive Expert
OK got it. Yes it does sound like corn. You have a few options. Your best bet would be to start by pressure checking the cooling system with a cooling system pressure checker. You're gonna want to do this with the engine is cold and has been sitting overnight before you start it. You can remove the radiator cap and then install a cooling system pressure checker. You can pump up the system to about 10 or 12 psi and look for any leaks. This makes it incredibly easy to locate even the smallest leak. You can get a cooling system pressure checker on Amazon and have it delivered right to your door. As far as the pop goes, it is hard to say what that was. However if there is coolant on any of the components under the hood including the belt it could certainly make a noise as the engine is running. So you might want to fix the coolant leak first and then re-test the system as needed. That might just do the trick and take care of the popping noise as well. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to help you. I really appreciate your patience through this process. My goal is to provide you with excellent service. Do you have any idea about the stalling/rpm. Like I said after I jumped my car this evening (but before the pop-hiss-smoke) while in park the car was running smoothly at about 1k rpms, as soon as I put it in drive the rpms dropped to about 500 and it was struggling not to stall. As a test I reved the engine (only to about 4k and it reved of normally, but as soon as it dropped back down it dropped too far and stalled the car. This was shortly before "pop-hiss-smoke". Is it possible i blew a gasket or broke a hose or something
Automotive Expert
Based on my experience the most likely possible cause of a stalling condition would be an air/vacuum leak, faulty or dirty throttle body, tight/loose valves or the mass air flow sensor. The popping hiss and smoking may be related so I would recommend to fix that issue first and then retest the system.
