Most vehicles like yours will have a shift lock actuator which allows you to change gears when you press the brake pedal. Usually a slight click sound can be heard when the brake pedal is depressed to indicate that the actuator is doing its job. If the click sound is not heard and you are unable to shift gears, the actuator may be faulty. For emergency situations, a manual shift lock override button is located near the shifter to enable you to shift gears in the event that your shift lock actuator quits working. Having this shifting issue inspected by a trained mechanic to confirm this diagnosis would be my best recommendation.
