P2146 code definition

Fuel Injector Group “A” Supply Voltage Circuit/Open

What the P2146 code means

P2146 is an OBD-II generic code for the engine control module (ECM) detecting that the fuel injector group “A” supply voltage circuit is open. This could be from bank 1 or the “A” supply voltage circuit that is open.

What causes the P2146 code?

  • The engine control module (ECM) is getting a voltage return from the fuel injectors and monitors the supply voltage to the injectors. Some vehicles supply voltage in groups or banks. If the voltage supply circuit is open or zero volts, then the code P2146 is set and the Check Engine Light is turned on.

  • A broken wire or connector on supply voltage circuit

What are the symptoms of the P2146 code?

  • The Check Engine Light will be illuminated and the code is set in the ECM memory as a fault.

  • The engine will run very rough or stall.

  • The engine will be hard to start or will not stay running after starting.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P2146 code?

  • Scans codes and documents the code in the ECM, then looks at the freeze frame data for failure.

  • Measures the voltage on the injector supply circuit

  • Diagnose and repairs code P2146 by following the manufacturer pinpoint tests

  • Checks the wiring and connector to the supply circuit for breaks or loose connections

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P2146 code?

  • Clearing ECM memory codes before checking the freeze frame data for the main failure problem, so the failure may be duplicated and repaired

  • Failing to clear the ECM codes after the codes are fixed

  • Failing to follow the pinpoint test completely causing the wrong part to be diagnosed

How serious is the P2146 code?

Code P2146 is a major failure in the fuel injector voltage supply circuit and will cause the engine to run very rough and misfire.

What repairs can fix the P2146 code?

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P2146 code

Code P2146 is for diesel and some gas motors and the failure may be the ECM and on some vehicles they may have a separate injector driver module that may cause the code.
