Q: While driving on highway, van door independently opened

asked by on September 21, 2016

The rear sliding door on my minivan has been continual headaches! I purchased the vehicle used and the passenger door started opening while I was driving. When I stopped to get gasoline one night, a passenger got out and the door fell off! I took it to the dealership for repair. Then, the driver’s side started opening while the van was in motion, driving. That was a few months after the other door had fallen off. Back to the driver’s side door, which happened one night while I was on a busy highway. When it independently opened, I pulled over to the shoulder and the door fell off while trying to close it. I went back to the dealership and got that door repaired. Now, the passenger side door has started independently opening again while I’m driving and the dealership will have to repair it too. This is a very dangerous situation because I usually have kids in the van with me. Do you know if there is any permanent way to fix these doors so this will stop happening?

Hello. Check back with the dealer on this, escalating if necessary with Saturn Customer Service. There are service bulletins: GM TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN # 07-08-64-007 AND BULLETIN # 07-08-64-007A which provide dealer instructions for verifying proper alignment and sensor condition to avoid unintended opening or closing of the door.

Crank seal leaking
Hello! I suggest getting a second opinion of the source of the leak, because a crank seal will not leak a fluid other than oil. The leak may be from a transmission seal, which is located almost "face to face"...
Occasional shaking and sluggishness while accelerating
If your vehicle is shaking and losing power, the most likely cause is fuel or ignition system related. I would recommend having the fuel pressure checked by a qualified professional to determine whether or not the fuel pressure is within...

WONT START
There are two common items that can cause an intermittent no start with this car. You already replaced the crank sensor, which is one of them. The other can be the key, and/or the Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS). If you...
My catalytic converter is rattling and there is smoke coming from my car. Is the catalytic converter faulty?
It is possible the catalytic converter got hot enough to fail on the last trip you took before this started. No pressure from the exhaust is a good sign that the car can't breath. This may be because it cannot...
Can I place gas back in my car after using 4 gallons of diesel?
Hey there. Unfortunately, diesel fuel (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/what-type-of-gas-should-i-use) does not combust the same as regular fuel does in a gasoline engine. Eventually, the car will run out of regular fuel and die as the diesel fuel is injected into the motor. Once...
Car is losing and acquiring power sporadically. Electronic Throttle Control Light is illuminated.
This may be a sign of a failing throttle position sensor (also known as an Electronic Throttle Control). The throttle position sensor (TPS) is a sensor used to monitor the throttle position of the throttle plate inside the throttle body...
No compression on two cylinder
Hi there: Although it's impossible for me to know without inspecting the vehicle onsite, I'm not quite certain the compression issue is mechanical here. It's quite common after a head gasket change due to an overheating issue for the crankshaft...
Oil pan bolts fell into transmission bell housing.
Hi there. The issue with leaving bolts in the bell housing on the transmission will be come catastrophic when the bolts come in contact with the clutch assembly. I recommend removing the starter and taking a telescoping magnet through the...
