Hello, my name is\*\*\*\*\* drive a 2011 Toyota [Prius](/topics-prius/) with 120,000 miles. It has been 8000 miles since the last oil change — the factory recommended interval is 5000, but I found somewhere that Toyota was suggesting 10000 was ok, so I was trying it out given how frequently I have to do oil changes. In the last week, the car is running a bit rougher than usual. I noticed the master warning light blink on for a second and then go off when braking, and something about oil pressure briefly flashed. I checked the oil and it seemed a bit low and darker than expected, so I decided to change it. Before doing so, I got a check [engine](/topics-engine-toyota/) light with a P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire detected code. Mechanic's Assistant: Does the light stay on, or does it blink? It stays on. I attempted an oil change and have removed the oil, but cannot get the [oil filter](/topics-oil-filter-toyota/) off. I have new oil and a new filter. The nearest Toyota dealership is ~30 miles away. Would I be risking totaling my car if I change the oil without changing the filter and driving it there for another oil change/inspection? Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Prius yourself? What have you tried so far? This is explained above.

Oil is cheap 8,000 or 10,000 miles is to much oil is cheap and the best maintenance for a vehicle. This generation prius does tend to use a little oil. If it has a missfire [spark plugs](/topics-spark-plug-toyota/) are the first step..if the missfire is still there a [ignition coil](/topics-ignition-coil-toyota/) should be changed

Hi John, chat is fine. I’m trying to figure out my best course of action
Automotive Expert
best course of action is 4 new spark plugs a #2 ignition coil and a oil change

I am in the middle of an oil change and am unable to get the oil filter off; it has been torqued on too tightly and I do not have the means to lift it higher than 2 ft off the ground. If I change the oil without changing the filter, and then drive it to a dealership for service am I going to destroy the engine (given the engine misfire warning?).
Automotive Expert
99.9 percent of missfires are a plug or coil.. if the engine light is flashing it can damage the catylitic converter with extended driving

The engine light just turned on with my last drive from work to home and was solid (not flashing). I got the code about the misfire via an OBD-2 device I keep connected (Bouncie).
Automotive Expert
then you should be fine but the plugs and coil should be done

Is the Toyota dealership my best bet for plugs/coil service? The one in my area is predatory, so I dislike going to them unless necessary.

Thanks
