Hello, my name is\*\*\*\*\* drive a 2011 Toyota [Prius](/topics-prius/) with 120,000 miles. It has been 8000 miles since the last oil change — the factory recommended interval is 5000, but I found somewhere that Toyota was suggesting 10000 was ok, so I was trying it out given how frequently I have to do oil changes. In the last week, the car is running a bit rougher than usual. I noticed the master warning light blink on for a second and then go off when braking, and something about oil pressure briefly flashed. I checked the oil and it seemed a bit low and darker than expected, so I decided to change it. Before doing so, I got a check [engine](/topics-engine-toyota/) light with a P0302 Cylinder 2 Misfire detected code. Mechanic's Assistant: Does the light stay on, or does it blink? It stays on. I attempted an oil change and have removed the oil, but cannot get the [oil filter](/topics-oil-filter-toyota/) off. I have new oil and a new filter. The nearest Toyota dealership is ~30 miles away. Would I be risking totaling my car if I change the oil without changing the filter and driving it there for another oil change/inspection? Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Prius yourself? What have you tried so far? This is explained above.
