Q: Question about a potential buy (2003 Hyundai Tiburon)

asked by on October 20, 2016

I'm looking at buying this particular Tiburon, and was wondering if you could tell me, just by looking at the ad, if it's worth what he's saying, and what price I could bring it down to. https://fredericksburg.craigslist.org/cto/5772971729.html

thank you.

My car has a manual transmission.

Just by looking at the photos, I notice the mileage is very low for the vehicles age. They say the door handle that is broke in picture is replaced. The clutch has been replaced. The seats look rough in the front but good in the back. The carpet looks real bad and may have water damage. The engine looks like it has oil leaks from the residue all over the fire wall. Without doing a thorough vehicle pre- purchase inspection it would be hard to tell if it has hidden problems that a picture does not reveal. Have a mechanic meet you there to do an inspection so you can be better informed to make your decision.

Advice on buying a reliable car
10,000 euros is around 12,000 US dollars. I would say get yourself a good used Toyota (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-to-buy-a-used-car). Those things can run forever and they are really made well. I know they make a lot of Toyotas (https://www.yourmechanic.com/scheduled-maintenance/toyota-corolla) in Europe, too....
Transmission was low. Put 4 quarts in it and everything was fine until next morning shifting to drive and felt like neutral
If the fluid was 4-5 quarts low, that's a third of the total transmission fluid capacity. The transmission has probably been running very hot because of that, causing accelerated wear to the internals (clutches, etc). Check the dipstick for the...
Engine light is on+ VSC Trac lights
The "VSC Trac light on" problem is related to a software problem with the yaw rate sensors calibration. This is documented in Toyota Technical Service Bulletin (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-to-use-a-technical-service-bulletin-tsb-to-diagnose-and-repair-a-car-by-valerie-johnston) TSB #BR005-03, which your Toyota service center can apply to re-calibrate this sensor....
Is it possible to start a car with a dead fuel pump? If so, how?
Hey there. You will need to verify whether or not the fuel pump is actually at fault before moving forward with repairs. This fuel pump is accessed under the rear seat through an access panel. If you have a bad...
Could bad or contaminated gasoline damage an ignition coil?
Hi there. Although bad or contaminated fuel can cause drivability concerns, it cannot physically damage the ignition coil. Ignition coils convey extremely high voltages with magnetic fields controlling them. Over time, coils simply wear out without warning; some with warning,...

Based on the symptoms you described, it is possible that your ignition switch may be having some issues. I would recommend having the ignition switch tested by a qualified professional to determine if it is functioning properly. If the ignition...
Squealing sound
Hello There, The drive belt tensioner (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/drive-belt-tensioner-replacement) may not need to be replaced if it is just the bearing inside the tensioner that is worn out, which is often times the case. As you may know, the tensioner pulley has...
Heard loud noise, engine light turned on, the a/c stopped working and the car was very hard to drive. I saw a broken hose. Help!
Overheating (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-overheating-inspection) can be caused by a number of issues. The hose blown off could be the cause as well as an effect. The engine could have begun to overheat before the hose blew off due to things like a...
2007 yaris sputters and stalls in park
Hi there. In most cases, when your engine runs fine, but will sputter and die when you put it into park, it's an indication of a vacuum leak, mass air flow sensor or EGR valve problem. It could also indicate...
