Hi. I have been told by numerous certified, & non certified mchanics, that I need a MAF. I dont believe them. Car always starts, sometimes stalls after warming up,when I put it in D.thats when it stalls. Starts right back up tho. CEL is on,but recently I noticed after putting gas in,it went off. Gas cap doesnt seem to be damaged. Also when coasting down a small hill,it down shifts(slows down), on its own..
Mechanic's Assistant: Does the light stay on, or does it blink?
Steady on
Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car?
'09 Nissan Maxima. Ive put $8000.in to car in three months. Just replacing older parts
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Maxima yourself? What have you tried so far?
No, I personally dont go the work. I just tell them what issues are,and they check, agree, and I order parts, they put them on
Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
At times I can smell gas steongly, but a local shop patched both exhausts, instead of replacing entire pipes,so could be coming from there. I no longer go there.

- What codes were retrieved and or what tests were done for them to come to the conclusion that you need a new MAF?

Since you were not able to reply to the info request I sent. I cannot be as accurate and thorough as I would like in my answer. I hope what I can provide does help.
If the vehicle only stalls when engaging drive then the concern is most likely a pressure loss inside the transmission resulting in the converter clutch engaging and stalling the engine.
Thank you for seeking us for help, I hope I provided what was needed. Press reply if you need to follow up. If you liked my answer please let me know so I can mark your question complete. Moose

Whats causing the pressure loss? Can a bad MAF cause it?
Chris(aka-Moose)

What is losing pressure?
What tests were done to confirm this pressure loss?

I thought you were referring to something other since the transmission and MAF not related and you included those together in your reply. A pressure loss in the transmission would be caused by leaking seals or valve body concerns.

Ok,thank u. Every mechanic around here just said MAF sensor was issue. Because a bad sensor can cause CVT to go.

Step one is to have the vehicle diagnosed by someone that actually is diagnosing not just doing a quick scan and educated guess. Since you are not doing the diag and repairs yourself. I am not able to provide much detail since we are not able to get past step one of diagnosing. I think it is best you let a transmission shop check out the vehicle and drive it so they can see if the concern is with the transmission or engine.

That should be good enough to go with the repair suggestions they have made. When you agree to a repair and sign the repair order that is a guarantee you are paying for a resolve, not a guess. So in the event, they are wrong then the return visit will be free if needed or the prior repair fees will be refunded.

They all said it was MAF. Things r shady here in Maine. A mechanic quoted me $753.00, I purchased all parts that he said I needed, bill was $1294.00 plus he wouldnt give me old parts for core return. He said they were his! Ill do online search to see if ur suggestion means tranny needs replaced. Thank you

That does seem shady. It may be better to use a dealer.

Thank you. I looked up what u said. I wasnt clear on word,"leak". I assumed u meant air leak, not fluids. There has been no visible signs of any leaks. I pay very close attention for signs of that. Car doesnt stall everytime I put it in D,and never has in R. No gear slippage either. This wknd it did make deep growl like sound,as coasting down hill & RPMs went up. First time for that.

Pressure leaks in the transmission/transaxle would not be external visual ones. They would be internal. Kind of like a pinhole in your heart causing you to have low blood pressure.

Unbelievable. I knew from day 1,there was Transmission issues, but my son in law, disagreed. I purchased car from my daughter, way over paying. Maximas r built to last right around [mileage](/topics-mileage-nissan/) it was when I bought it. So in ur opinion by what Ive told u,u dont think the sensors the issue? I know u can guarantee what u tell me, im just asking ur opinion.

My opinion would be the MAF sensor is not to blame with the info so far provided.
