The front of the car was smoking a little with a very bad smell

is it electrical smoke? If you smell smoke you have a harness issue or computer melt down

Does the engine not even crank now? Alot of these engines were seizing up and there was a recall out on them. Is it a Kia Optima? or Sorrento? Thank you! and Merry Christmas!

Pull the oil dipstick out and smell the dipstick, look at the oil. Does it smell burned? Did the vehicle not even crank when you put the jumper cables on it? or did you just hear it click?

I'm thinking the engine is locked up by what the symptoms you are giving me. Have you heard about the recall on the 2015 optimas? OK, so it did start again? after it cooled off?

So indeed if it hasn't been done already, I would first call the closest KIA dealer tom. am. Give them your VIN number and see if yours is covered. It could also be another recall. But I believe by what your telling me, that is very well could be either issue and could be covered so it wouldn't cost you anything if it is covered.

It could be the alternator, but I doubt it, as they usually last a good while and your vehicle isn't that old. I doubt seriously it's the starter, but as much problems as they have had out of those engines on that model. I would make sure that you give KIA a call tom. a.m. and ask them if there are any open recalls on your vehicle. That way if it's covered you don't have to pay anything. if it is something else. they could advise you then what it would cost to repair it. But this sounds safety related and I believe it could be covered.
