My car starts and runs perfectly fine when its the first time I turn it over that day. After I drive it for maybe a quarter mile to a gas station, I turn it off, pump gas, and get back in. After I turn the car on again and put it in gear, it'll stall out. Then I try to kick it over again, and this time if it doesn't stall again, it goes to a very low idle, almost stalling, and then it jumps. Then it fixes itself
Mechanic's Assistant: Is the check [engine](/topics-engine/) light on? Does the car stall at idle or when driving?
It doesn't stall in idle or when driving. Only when i said that it stalled. No, the CEL is not on.
Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car?
1995 BMW 540i
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your 540i yourself? What have you tried so far?
Replaced the intake air temp sensor
Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
If I drive it down the road and it starts to warm up, about a 1/4 of the way on the temp gauge, if I come to a stop, it'll start to jump and idle really low, but if I wait at the light for 20 seconds, the idle will fix itself and i won't have the problem anymore. But if I turn the car off and let it sit for an hour or so and try to turn the engine over again, it doesn't turn over until the third time I try and it starts really low and hesitates.

Hello and welcome. Have you checked the system for fault codes? If no faults are present you need to smoke test the intake for air leaks or vacuum leaks. Sounds like you may have a small vacuum leak

How would I smoke test the intake?

They sell smoke machines that produce smoke to fill the intake. There is no real other way to check for vacuum leaks except for visually inspecting all the hoses or cracks. Check the intake boot for cracks as well.

Hi. The automatic tensioner in your vehicle is a one piece design. It comes mounted onto a bracket, if it is replaced completely. It is possible to only replace the pulley and bearing, but if the issue is with the...
That is a rather complex tire pressure monitoring system used by Audi. Using multiple sensors, antennae, and control module, this may require the Audi manufacturer's scan tool to communicate with in order to diagnose. A tire service center (that is...
Hello. The symptoms you are describing are very unusual. The clutch and brake hydraulic systems on your vehicle are separate, and should function completely independently of each other. The brake master cylinder uses a completely different set of lines than...
Hello, thanks for writing in about your 2016 Hyundai Accent. You will be ok driving it around. Your mudguard does not serve a critical function that would otherwise prevent you from driving your car safely. If you'd like some peace...
Hello, thank you for writing in. If the engine is not turning over when you try to start the car then the starter is not receiving power, or is not using the power. Several components must pass the electricity through...
The engines (i.e., the long block assemblies) from the two subject VIN's are 100% interchangeable. Please note though that sensors, electronics, controls and accessories on the engines would have to be separately verified OR, without verification, simply carried over from...
Hi there - a common cause of this problem with BMWs is loose sway bar links (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-bad-or-failing-stabilizer-bar-links). It is also possible that one of the many heat shields has come loose somehow and is rattling. I recommend a noise inspection...
Hello, thank you for writing in. Overheating the engine is one of the fastest ways to ruin the car. Once the vehicle has overheated several other components beyond the cooling system fail, including potentially fatal damages to the engine. If...
It sounds like you may have an electrical short (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/electrical-components-are-not-working-inspection) somewhere causing the interior power to fail. This may be caused by a blown fuse, a failed relay, a wiring problem or in some cases a alternator hat is beginning...
