The dashboard light for the battery comes on and then goes off again. There doesn't seem to be a connection to anything else. The battery seems quite good even though it has 3 or 4 years.

The "battery" light is actually the charging system warning light. It means that the charging voltage is low. Most often it indicates a problem with the alternator, but there can be other causes as well. If the alternator is not charging and your battery is in good condition, you will still be able to drive the car and re-start it until the battery voltage drops below a certain point. You need to stop driving the car until you get this checked out to avoid being stranded. You can have it checked out at your convenience by contacting YourMechanic. They can send a technician to your home or office to check out your charging system and let you know what is the solution.
