Q: ABS light, traction control light and handbrake light blink at the same time and the car jerks

asked by on February 16, 2018

It started when driving a couple weeks back and the abs and traction control light came off and on while driving and steering wheel made a obvious croaking noise whenever it was turned (figured this would be power steering low). I checked the power steering and it was fine, I never heard the steering wheel noise again. And just yesterday there was loud croaking coming from the right side of the engine, not sure where but noise was louder on driver side. Same sort of noise of the steering wheel situation but was not coming from steering wheel. Every time I accelerated or was just driving in general the noise continued. Then ABS light and traction control light came on randomly after 3 weeks from the previous steering situation. kept driving and it would turn off and on for the entirety of the drive. Then the ABS light, traction control light and handbrake light Blinked for a second all at the same time and the car jerked as if I had suddenly braked. Happened x2. Car is fine today.

My car has 155000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

It is not clear from your description if the noise you are hearing is primarily engine versus chassis (suspension, etc.) related. The origin of the noise can be pinpointed though if you request a vehicle noise diagnostic. That the ABS and traction control lights have come on mean that trouble codes have been stored. Those codes should be downloaded and evaluated in the course of a diagnostic. To give you an idea of possible faults that might be involved in these systems, and that might be the cause of the warning lights, you could have: loose electrical connections, a faulty wheel-speed sensor, a faulty steering-angle sensor, a faulty rotational-speed sensor, an issue with the steering rack, foreign matter or debris lodged in one of the wheels, or the traction/ABS control system (computer) needs to be reprogrammed. If you request Traction Control diagnostic and repair service, the responding certified mechanic will get this taken care of for you. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.

Speedometer isn't working
Hi. If your speedometer is not working, and your Check Engine Light (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/check-engine-light-is-on-inspection) this may be a sign that your speedometer sensor has failed. As the speedometer sensor is located in the transmission, underneath the vehicle, I would recommend having...
I'm considering buying another car and it's going to be an automatic. Is it worth it? I've never had one.
It depends. I personally like to drive the standard because you have more control, you get a tiny bit better gas mileage, and you can drive faster. It's a better driving experience. You've got to think about how far people...
Can I replace my rear flat with a donut and leave it sit on the donut for several months before replacing?
The vehicle should be okay as long as it is not driven. The temporary spare (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-long-do-spare-tires-last) is designed to go only 50 miles. It does not have any time limit but only a mileage limit. It may need to be...
car wont start after changing crank shaft pulley
This sounds like potentially either a loose crankshaft pulley bolt or potentially stripped threads on this bolt. Either way, this has likely caused a problem with timing (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/adjust-ignition-timing) and potentially a variety of other issues. Since you can't get the...
Stalling vehicle when vdc and slip light comes on
Hi there. I've seen this same concern during my tenure as a Nissan service manager. What usually happens is the wire harness to those sensors becomes brittle and loose. When this happens, it does need to be replaced/repaired. The odds...

You may have a dirty or failing idle air control valve. The idle air control valve reads the air intake as it is mixed with fuel prior to being injected into the engine at low speeds and at idle. Since...
My catalytic converter was replaced and everything seems fine. However the engine seems incredibly loud and this occurred on the highway.
Hi there. There is an exhaust leak under the vehicle. Check the catalytic converter, muffler, and all the clamps under the vehicle on the exhaust pipe and see if anything came loose. Hook up any parts that are disconnected on...

Why would my brake light bulb not come out of a 2008 Toyota Sienna? It's stuck..
If you are having problems with the light socket not coming out of the light housing then you must have a melted connector and it has basically welted itself in to the husing. If you cannot get out the socket...
