The system pulls air from outside the vehicle, and pumps it through the air injection hose, and into the exhaust system, where it helps convert carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. If your air injection hose breaks, the necessary amount of air will not be added into the car’s exhaust system. This is unlikely to result in an immediately noticeable change in your car, but it will lower the vehicle’s emissions. A cracked or broken air injection hose means your vehicle is polluting more, and is unlikely to pass an emissions inspection.
