What is the Air Pump all about?

Decades ago, exhaust systems were pretty simple. The spent gases vented from the engine through the exhaust manifold, into the exhaust pipe, and then out through a muffler. However, stricter environmental laws and regulations have significantly impacted today’s automotive exhaust systems. A number of new components, including your car’s air pump, must be in place to ensure that the engine emits as few harmful elements as possible. Also known as the smog pump, this secondary air injection system essentially pushes air into the exhaust system to help ensure that all unburned fuel is combusted. If the air pump is not working, excess emissions and pollutants will be released into the atmosphere.

Keep in mind:

  • Your air pump is electronic, and subject to a number of potential problems, including issues with wiring or shorts.
  • Your air pump is an important part of your emissions system and should not be removed (removing smog pumps is popular with “modders” looking to lighten their vehicle).
  • You need an operational smog pump to pass your emissions test.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle hood is raised and supported
  • The defective air pump is removed
  • The new air pump is installed
  • The air pump is tested for proper operation
  • The vehicle hood is closed and road tested for proper operation

Our recommendation:

Your car’s air pump is a vital part of your emissions system and helps reduce pollution from your engine. While there is no set life expectancy for these components, they do fail from time to time. If you suspect there’s a problem with your emissions system, or you’ve failed your emissions test, have your car diagnosed by one of our expert mechanics.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Air Pump?

  • Engine runs rough (due to insufficient pressure)
  • Check Engine light is on
  • Car experiences reduced power while accelerating

How important is this service?

Having an operational emissions system is important for many reasons, including reducing pollution and ensuring that your engine runs properly. Without an operating air pump the pressure in your exhaust will be too low, the engine will run poorly, and fuel efficiency will decrease. Have a faulty air pump replaced promptly.

Chevrolet Silverado 3500 V8-6.6L Turbo Diesel - Oil Change - Nuevo, California
Jay is very good and has been doing this for a long time. But what makes him so different is he has integrity. Twice now, he has passed on doing a job because it did not need to be done. Most mechanics and for sure dealerships would have turned a blind eye and did the job. Example-With my last job, my brakes start making what I thought was a worn-out pad. My truck had 127K on it, and the brakes pads have never been done. Who knew you could get 200K out of a set of brake pads. Anyway, I had already purchased the pads and had them waiting for Jay. After inspecting all four brakes, he called me. He explained he could do the job, but the pads are only about 60% worn, and I should be able to make 200K. Of course, I passed on the brake job and just paid Jay for the inspection time. I wish other mechanics were this honest. Honesty will keep the customer coming back, and that is why Jay is my goto mechanic.
