What is the Windshield Washer Pump all about?

The windshield washer pump is a small electric water pump. When the washer pump is activated, it takes the washer fluid from the windshield washer reservoir and directs it to be sprayed through the washer jets onto the windshield. It is an electrical component that can fail over time. If you don't see any fluid coming out of the washer jets when you activate the windshield wiper switch, ask the mechanic to check the tubes for cracks and the nozzles for clogging.

Keep in mind:

Whenever the windshield washer pump is repaired or replaced, the entire windshield washing system should be inspected. It’s possible that the nozzles or the wiper switch are actually the cause of the problem.

How it's done:

  • Test operation of the wiper switch.
  • Make sure the nozzles are not clogged.
  • Test for power and ground at the washer pump.
  • Remove and replace the washer pump.
  • Test for proper operation of the washer system.

Our recommendation:

The windshield washing and wiping system is usually not inspected during routine maintenance. However, anytime a part of the windshield washing and wiping system is replaced or repaired, the windshield washer pump should be checked. If you notice that your vehicle is having a hard time spraying wiper fluid onto your windshield, you should schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Windshield Washer Pump?

When the washer pump is activated, washer fluid doesn't spray on windshield.

How important is this service?

Your windshield washing system is designed to keep your windshield clean and your visibility high. When you pull the windshield washer switch on the steering column, the windshield washer pump is activated. The windshield washer pump is an electric water pump that pulls washer fluid from the windshield washer reservoir, and sends it to the washer jets, where it is sprayed onto the windshield through nozzles. This washer fluid acts as soap, and the windshield wiper blades then wipe it off. This process cleans your windshield of any dirt and debris that has accumulated on it.

When the windshield washer pump malfunctions, washer fluid will not be sent to the washer jets, and your vehicle will not be able to spray washer fluid onto the windshield. As a result, your visibility will decrease.

Chevrolet Cavalier L4-2.2L - Car is making a noise - Sacramento, California
Well I really did appreciate the phone call from Nick on when he was going to show up. But the service is another thing, I wanted him to test drive my car to make sure it is the transmission that is making the noise. But instead he was pretty sure it is the transmission. But some how I doubt it, I got new tires put on so it may be those. I have never had any problems like this before. I also had a small transmission fluid leak but got that taken care of. So he said not to worry about it right now just let him know if it gets worse. Thank god I am in tune with my car so when something doesn’t seem right I get it taken care of immediately. But nick is a nice guy and very polite. All in all I was okay with him.

Chevrolet Cavalier L4-2.2L - Clutch is not working - Baltimore, Maryland
100% Satisfied. I booked an inspection to have my brother's Chevy Cavalier checked out. His clutch system failed, rendering his car stranded in the parking lot of his apartment complex, in Baltimore City. My brother is a disabled vet, who lives independently, yet relies heavily upon family to help him. We live in Frederick, MD. For a month, we racked our brains, trying to figure out how to get his car from Baltimoret to our local garage without spending a fortune. Low and behold, I found Your Mechanic and Berchel came to our rescue! Berchel had a prior cancellation and contacted me 3 hours ahead of our scheduled appointment to inquire if we could meet sooner. When told, my brother's were still in Frederick and had to drive to Baltimore to meet him, he agreed to stay in the area and patiently wait for their arrival. In the interim, he had gone to the address where the car was located. My brother's were impressed by Berchel's friendly personality, excellent customer services skills, automotive knowledge, mechanical skills and ability to quickly diagnose the clutch malfunction and problem solve to make it temporarily drivable. Berchel explained everything he was doing, why he was doing it as, he checked the car. He was thorough, knowledgeable, honest and upfront. With his expertise, Berchel managed to get the clutch to function, so my brother COULD drive his Chevy Cavalier, from Baltimore to Frederick, for repair at our local garage. We are so grateful and appreciative. He is a top notch mechanic and wonderful human being!! Thank you, Berchel. 
