Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
P0410 is an OBD-II generic code that the engine control module (ECM) detected the engine O2 sensor did not detect an increase in the O2 level in the exhaust when the air injection system was commanded on during an active test.
The Check Engine Light will be illuminated and the code is set in ECM memory and freeze frame.
The air injection system pump may be noisy from bad bearings.
The engine may run too rich if excessive O2 is being pumped into the exhaust.
Scans codes and documents the freeze frame data in order to verify the problem
Clears the engine codes and retests the air injection system for proper operation
Repairs any O2 sensor or other engine codes before continuing with code P0410 diagnosis
Monitors the O2 sensor pid on a scanner to see if the sensor reacts when the air injection pump is activated, the sensor should go to below 150 mv within 3 seconds
Replaces a sluggish O2 sensor and retests system
Checks air injection relay for power out of relay if pump does not turn on
Checks the air injection pump for proper resistance between pins of power and ground
Not checking for proper intake air flow into the air injection pump before replacing the pump for no air pumping out of it
Not checking the air injection pump relay for burnt wire connections before replacing a bad air injection pump
The air injection pump system is to help lower the emissions coming out the exhaust and can cause the vehicle to fail emission testing.
The check engine light being on causes the vehicle to fail emission testing.
The air injection pump should not cause any drive symptoms other than a Check Engine Light.
Code P0410 is triggered when the air injection pump passive test fails or is inconclusive then the ECM commands the pump to do an active test and the O2 sensor does not output a higher O2 content in the exhaust within 3 seconds.
