Part 1 of 3: Select a Tennessee license plate theme
Step 1: Go to the Department of Revenue website. Open your web browser and visit the Tennessee Department of Revenue home page.
Step 2: Go to the title and registration page. Visit the Department of Revenue title and registration site.
From the home Department of Revenue web page, click on the button that says “Title and Registration.”
Step 3: Go to the license plates page. Visit the license plates portion of the Department of Revenue website.
From the title and registration page, click the button that says “License Plates.”
Step 4: Choose a license plate theme. Select a Tennessee license plate theme for your personalized plates.
From the license plate page, click on the button that says “Available license plates.”
Choose one of the menus to select the genre of license plate theme that you want. Look through all of the available options until you find the license plate theme that you like the most.
There are dozens of options, ranging from various animals, to organizations and charities, to sports teams.
- Tip: Make sure you note the exact name of the personalized license plate that you want for your vehicle.
Part 2 of 3: Order your personalized Tennessee license plate
Step 1: Go to the personalized plates page. Visit the personalized plates section of the Department of Revenue website.
Return to the license plates page, and click the button that reads “Personalized plates."
Step 2: Fill out the application form. Open the personalized license plate application form and fill out the information.
From the personalized plates page, click the link titled “Application for Tennessee personalized license plate.” Once you have loaded this form, print it out.
Fill out the personal information required on the form, then fill out your top three choices for a license plate message.
The order in which you put these choices is the order in which they will be prioritized. For instance, if the first message you choose is available, you will get that license plate. If it is unavailable, you will get the second choice, if that is available, and so on.
Specify which license plate theme you would like.
Tip: There is an area to explain the significance of your license plate message. You should always fill out this part of the form as well.
Warning: Different license plate themes may have different character length restrictions. Be sure to check that the license plate theme you are choosing is compatible with the plate messages you are opting for.
Step 3: Write a check. Write a check to cover the fee of your personalized license plate application.
Follow the instructions at the top of the application to determine how much money you owe for your personalized license plate.
Write a check to the State of Tennessee and include it with your application form.

Step 4: Mail your application. Send in your application for a personalized Tennessee license plate.

Part 3 of 3: Install your new personalized Tennessee license plates
Step 1: Pick up your plates. Get your license plates from your local clerk’s office.
Your personalized license plates will arrive at the clerk’s office at the end of the following month. When they arrive, the clerk’s office will call you, at which point you can go pick them up.
Step 2: Install the plates. Install your personalized license plates on your vehicle.
After picking up your personalized license plates, install them on both the front and rear of your vehicle.
- Tip: If you don’t feel like you can successfully install your license plates, simply call a mechanic to assist you.
