A personalized license plate is a great way to add some fun and some personality to your vehicle. With a personalized license plate, you can show public support for your favorite college sports team, advertise your family’s business, give a shout out to a family member or spouse, or simply share a short word or sentiment with the world.
In Oklahoma, it’s very quick and simple to order a personalized license plate. Furthermore, a personalized license plate is also a very affordable purchase. So if you’ve been looking for a way to add some customization to your car, a personalized license plate may be perfect for you.
Part 1 of 3: Choose a personalized plate color
Step 1: Go to the specialty license plate page. Visit the Oklahoma Motor Vehicle Division specialty license plate page.
Step 2: Look through the personalized plate selection. View the available personalized plate designs.
Click on the “Personalized license plate” link to see the different personalized plate designs. The personalized plate options are all the same design, just in different colors.
- Tip: If you would like a specialized license plate design, click on one of the other available links from the page in Step 1. Oklahoma offers dozens of specialized license plate designs, ranging from professional sports teams, to military alumni, to organization support. However, specialized license plate designs cannot be personalized.
Step 3: Pick a plate color. Choose the plate color that you would like for your personalized license plate.
All of the personalized plate design colors cost the same amount of money.
Part 2 of 3: Order your personalized license plates
Step 1: Download the form. Download and print the personalized license plate form.
Click on the link titled “Form 749 (Download)” to download the personalized plate form to your computer.
Print the form.
- Tip: If you would rather, you can fill out the form on your computer before printing it.
Step 2: Enter your info. Enter your personal information on the application.
Provide your name, address, phone number, and email address.
Step 3: Check the “Original” box. Check the box that says “Original or replacement.”
Step 4: Choose a plate message. Select a personalized plate message and up to five backups.
Use the boxes to write down your choices for a license plate message. Put your top choice in the box that says “1st”, as that box will be prioritized first. If your first choice is not available, your second choice will be prioritized, and so on.
Tip: Your license plate message can be up to seven characters, including one space or dash. It must include a minimum of four letters and a maximum of three numbers, if the letters and numbers are not intermingled. If the characters are intermingled, there are no restrictions. If the message is entirely numbers, it must be seven numbers. If the message is entirely letters, it can be any length.
Warning: Crude or inappropriate messages will not be accepted by the Oklahoma Motor Vehicle Division.
Step 5: Choose a plate color. Select the license plate color that you would like.
Step 6: Enter your vehicle info. Enter your vehicle information on the application form.
Enter your vehicle’s year and make, Oklahoma title number, license plate number, license plate decal number, and decal expiration date.
- Tip: You can find all of this information on your vehicle’s registration card.
Step 7: Sign the application. Sign the application that you just filled out.
Step 8: Pay the fee. Pay the personalized license plate fee.
Write a check or secure a money order for $23. The money should be made out to Oklahoma Tax Commission.
- Note: Your check or money order must include your current driver’s license number on it.
Step 9: Mail the application. Mail your personalized license plate application to the Oklahoma Tax Commission.
Place your application and payment in an envelope, and send it to:

Part 3 of 3: Install your personalized license plates
Step 1: Get your plates. Get your personalized plates in the mail.
After your application has been received, reviewed, and accepted, your new license plates will be manufactured and mailed to your address. Your decals will also be mailed to you.
- Note: This process can take up to four months, so don’t be worried if you don’t receive your plates shortly after sending your application.
Step 2: Install your plates. Install your personalized license plates and decals.
As soon as you receive your new license plates and decals, install them on both the front and back of your car.
Be sure to place current registration stickers on your new license plates before driving.
It doesn’t take very much effort or money to add personalized Oklahoma license plates to your vehicle, but it can be a fun and creative addition to your car.
