Husband accidentally put antifreeze in power steering reservoir. How dangerous? Can we drive to get flushed? How much damage? Mechanic's Assistant: Okay, I'll connect you to the Mechanic to discuss this further with you. Before I do, is there anything else you want him to know? Car is a Volvo sedan about 8 years old.

Hello and thank you for using Just Answer. I am an ASE Certified Technician who will be further assisting you. Sorry to hear you're having issues with your Volvo. I know it can be frustrating, but let's see what we can do to get you going. It depends on how much antifreeze was poured into the power steering system. Antifreeze will cause oil to get milky and therefore ruin the power steering pump or steering assembly. I highly suggest getting it towed to a shop to flush the system unless your husband has some basic tools. We can guide him on how to perform these procedure. Lifting the vehicle and removing some covers will be required. Please let me know if we can be of further assistance.

He poured in about an ounce to "top off" before he realized what he did.Can any mechanic flush and then how do you determine damage. He just "confessed his error" and it's been a couple weeks.Do we need to go to Volvo to have the power steering assessed for damage??

You typically hear noises when there's an issue with the power steering pump. If this has not just occurred and fluid does not look thick, then you should be fine to drive it to any mechanic. Procedure is not very difficult and can be performed within 30 minutes.

Is the solenoid malfunctioning or the camshaft with a P0011 Check engine code?
Code P0011 is most commonly caused by the solenoid or cam sensor. I would recommend replacing the solenoid first and then cam sensor.
