Husband allowed car to run out of gas. After putting gas in the car (2017 Ford Fusion 4 cylinder), the car still will not start. Randomly, it has started 3 or 4 times and runs fine until turned off and again will not crank. We’ve taken all the steps advised to after refueling but nothing has helped. I’m wondering if from the beginning we were wrong about the issue. The car may have been low on gas but not out but when wouldn’t crank, that was logical solution. However, could it have been the EGR valve? Would it cause cranking issues? Would the car periodically crank? And once cranked, would it run normal until next time it was cranked? I’m beginning to think it was just coincidental the car was low on fuel when this problem occurred and was not the issue from the beginning. Does this sound logical?
Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the fuel supply? And are all the [spark plugs](/topics-spark-plug-ford/) working?
Yes all spark plugs are working and are fairly new. What do you mean by checking fuel supply?
Mechanic's Assistant: What confuses you?
The car has 3/4 tank of gas if that is what you are asking.
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Fusion yourself? What have you tried so far?
Everything tried has stemmed from us thinking car ran out of fuel. He has primed fuel line, had battery checked, spark plugs checked even tried having someone jump car off Everything in car seems fine, it simply will not crank. It has push button start and when pushed everything in car comes on just doesn’t crank. It will say to apply [brake](/topics-brake-ford/) to crank which of course was done but if done again it just clicks but nothing else. We were trying to fix ourselves but may not be able to.

When you turn the key on you should hear a buzzing noise from the fuel tank for a few seconds . Have one person turn the key on and another listens by the fuel filler .

If the erg valve is stuck in the open position it will keep the car from cranking

If the fuel pump is running it should start , im sure you have tried it a few times already. so i would say its probably not a fuel issue
if it was stuck open , it would cause the car to run rough and stall but would probably start back up .
