My car disengages drive and the speedometer increases as I pressed the gas pedal but the car does not accelerate. Occasionally the drive will engage but then disengages. It does the same thing in reverse Mechanic's Assistant: How old is the [transmission](/topics-transmission-ford/)? Have you checked the fuel filters? I have not checked the fuel filters and the car is a 2008 Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model of your '08 car? It's a Ford escape with about 140,000 miles on it Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Escape yourself? What have you tried so far? It just happened and I have not done anything to it yet Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? No I think that's all I can think of

Hi my name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I will be assisting you today. The system will offer a phone call but please disregard. So to start with have you tried to put it in drive and see if the axle shaft or drivetrain is turning?

I just said it sitting in reverse a bit ago. I pressed the gas and the RPMs shoot up. But the speedometer and the vehicle do not move. I left it sitting in reverse for a short while and watched after pressing the gas and the car seemed like it was trying to move backwards but just little spurts of rockinghadI just had it sitting in reverse a bit ago. Ok sounds like the clutches in the transmission might be slipping. Have you checked the transmission fluid or for any leaks? Is there a check [engine](/topics-engine-ford/) light or any other lights?

There are no lights on. It seems like there are signs of oil near the engine like a seal might be near its end. But I have not checked the transmission fluid yetI've not seen direct signs of transmission leak

Ok that would be the next step low transmission fluid or deteriorated fluid will cause these same symptoms.

Okay thank you!

No problem

My car wont start and my trunk won't open
Hi there. Your issue of your car not wanting to start sounds more like a dead battery and will need to be replaced. The reason for this is because of you not being able to operate your windows or even...
When turned to the "On" position, there is a clicking noise as if there's a dead battery.
Hello and thank you for contacting YourMechanic. Check the connections from the ignition switch to the starter. It seems to me like there is a short within the ignition switch (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/ignition-switch-replacement) making the starter engage when the ignition switch is...
Carbon canister making a loud hissing noise.
Hi there. The loud hissing noise could be caused by a split vacuum hose or a loose hose. Follow the hiss to make sure it is the canister and not a separate hose. The code stored for the Check Engine...
My car is having trouble idling.
You may have a dirty or failing idle air control valve. The idle air control valve reads the air intake as it is mixed with fuel prior to being injected into the engine at low speeds and at idle. Since...
Hissing noise from bottom right side when accelarating
This may be a sign of a vacuum leak. High idle speed, stalling and hissing sounds are common signs of a vacuum leak. When a vacuum leak is present in an engine, this causes an excessive imbalance in the air/fuel...

Aisin transmission
The transmission is reliable and, indeed, I see no transmission related complaints in the NHTSA (http://www.safercar.gov) database for the 2007 Volvo S80. The car overall has a total of only 10 complaints in the NHTSA database which is the smallest...
