Hey. I have a 2005 ford focus 2.0 zx4. I changed the routine schedule 150,000 mile air filter with a k/n high flow kit. I cleaned the throttle body while was apart. Also cleaned maf. Started it and idled and reversed great. Then when I put pedal down it bucks the car does. After 5 min driving check [engine](/topics-engine-ford/) light came on. Called for maf and o2 see Mechanic's Assistant: Does the light stay on, or does it blink? Sensor I replaced maf Still same thing and same codes Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Focus yourself? What have you tried so far? Light stays on Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Nomam

HI Dustin, it's nice to meet you. Do you still have the factory air cleaner so you could install it and see if there is any change? Sometimes the different air filter can cause the maf code to appear. Also, if you have the specific P codes can I get them?

No I transitioned the box it is no longer for stock. The codes I do not have just left bank o2 sensor and maf sensor. I changed maf. Did not change or yet. No problems till todayDid not change o2 yetThe air intake is replica of k/nCan the maf wire plug be the problem?
Automotive Expert
I understand, it sounds like the air filter is causing the issue since there wasn't any problem prior. Try unplugging the maf sensor and see if it will run any better for you. Sometimes they will. If the K&N is a cold air intake, you may need a tune to run it. The O2 won't cause the bucking issue, but the maf will, that's what you should be concerned with first.

Okay, I read it doesn't need tuning after install though.?
Automotive Expert
The wiring can cause the issue, but it seems odd it would happen right after replacing the air filter. That shouldn't really cause any problem. Sometimes the pins or wires push back out of the connector, so make sure they are good to go. Some don't, but with the issues you are having, something is amiss, only since you installed it really points to an issue there. Try the test and let me know how it goes. Don't unplug it with the car running, unplug it, then start the car and see if it's any better.

Okay, thanks
Automotive Expert
Let me know how it goes.

Hey it is NOT bucking now. What effects do you think it will have on driving without maf plugged in? Can I bypass it or something so I can get the check engine light off for future driving? Thanks
Automotive Expert
Well, you can drive it that way, but the light is going to stay on. You won't be able to bypass it. You might have a defective aftermarket sensor though, so if you can take it back and get another to try. If there is a still an issue I would contact K&N and find out what the deal is with their air filter.

Ok thanks
Automotive Expert
You're welcome.

Car misfires when driving 45+ mph for extended period of time

Starting problem
At 180.000 miles, it could be just about anything. The P0161 and P0140 codes are oxygen sensor codes, and probably don't have anything to do with the starting issue, though you should have that investigated (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/air-fuel-ratio-sensor-replacement). The P0300 code however...
My car leaked all of the oil from the oil filter and now it's making a loud thumping noise - did the engine pop ?
