I have 70 chevelle with the original engine. A 307 2bbl carb. This is going to be my first car, the thing im worried about is the engine maybe needing a rebuild, if so would the pistons, rings, valves and bearings, carb be fine or should i just rebuild the entire engine, check compression first? The engine runs just been sitting for 20 years. I am on a limited budget 1k and under.
My car has 100000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.
Generally, a simple rebuild would include things like replacing rings, bearings, gaskets, having a valve job done and potentially replacing pistons and/or boring if needed, however even with doing much of the work on your own, you will likely be spending more than $1,000 depending on your access to parts. You may want to consider a simple tear down, having the cylinder walls checked to determine whether or not they need to be bored and fit with new pistons. If not, this will save you some money on boring and a new set of pistons. You will also want to of course rebuild the carburetor as well, especially if it has been sitting for 20 years.
