If you’re looking for a half-ton pickup truck that also gets great gas mileage, look no further than the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid. While it has the towing and carrying capacity you’d look for in any regular truck, it also has much better fuel efficiency.
Key Features
The 2012 Silverado Hybrid’s main feature is that it runs on hybrid gas and electric power, but that’s not all that drivers love about this truck. The interior and exterior are both sleek and modern, and you have a choice of cab size and bed length to fit your needs.
Changes for 2012
The front end of all of the Silverado models got an update in 2012 for a cleaner look that brings the truck up to modern standards of style.
What We Like
We really like the idea of getting 20+ miles per gallon in a half-ton pickup truck. That kind of fuel efficiency has been previously unheard of in a vehicle of this size and capacity.
What Concerns Us
Hybrid technology has been around for a while, but it’s just now getting used on larger vehicles. We haven’t seen any major issues with the Silverado Hybrid, but because it is such a new concept, we do hold some reservations. However, the Silverado Hybrid has been in production since 2005, so we believe that most issues with the battery and gas engine should have been worked out by now.
Available Models
Available in regular, extended, and crew cabs, the 2012 Silverado Hybrid features pretty impressive specs, especially for a hybrid engine:
- Engine – 6.0-liter V8
- Power – 332 HP at 5100 RPM
- Torque – 367 lb-ft at 4100 RPM
- Fuel efficiency (MPG city/highway) – 20/23
Major Recalls
Some models have been recalled due to issues holding battery charge after sitting in cold temperatures for an extended period of time. This problem can affect the power steering assist and should be addressed immediately.
Common Issues
Aside from the recalled vehicles, there have been virtually no issues with the 2012 Silverado Hybrid. While other year models have experienced some issues with drivetrain problems, these seem to have been addressed by 2012. In other words, if you can find a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid, and you want a half-ton truck with great fuel efficiency, you should take the plunge.
