Hello. My van had been shaking off and on for short periods. But now, it is shaking rather violently. My check engine light had always been on, but when the van started with the heavy shaking, it would blink and the bell would go off. Could you help me try to figure this out?
Mechanic's Assistant: Does the light stay on, or does it blink?
It used to stay on. When it started to shake consistently it would blink of and on.
Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car?
It's a dodge caravan 2008
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Caravan yourself? What have you tried so far?
I'm not fixing it.
Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
I don't t think so

A flashing check engine light means the PCM is seeing the engine is misfiring and it's warning you that catalytic converter damage can occur if you keep driving it.
A misfire can be caused by many things like failing spark plugs, spark plug wires, coil, injectors, fuel delivery problems, engine mechanical issue and etc, etc.
The PCM will have misfire fault codes stored that will tell us if just one cylinder is misfiring or more than one.
Have you had your vehicle scanned for fault codes yet? If yes do you know what the codes were?

I haven't even thought about getting it checked so no.

The first thing we should do is get the fault codes read. Some parts stores will do this at no charge. Once I know what codes are setting then I'll have a better idea of what we should do.
The most common cause would be failing spark plugs and spark plug wires.

But should I even be driving it if it is now continuing to shake?

If the engine light is flashing or it's shaking to a point where it's difficult to accelerate then no you should have it towed to a repair shop.

Yeah, that's what's happening with it.

Okay, you will be better off to have it towed. It wouldn't be safe to drive it if it's misfiring bad and you can damage the catalytic converter because it gets red hot from the misfiring.
