My temperature hand in my truck was going over to the right and overheating. As long as I kept coolant or water in the [radiator](/topics-radiator-chevy/) it did not overheat. I had it checked, they said no radiator leak. They replaced the cap. I skipped afew days of adding coolant or water. It overheated and when I added some water, you could see it leaking out. What do you think? Mechanic's Assistant: What part of the car is the leak coming from? And are you sure it's water? Standing in front of truck and looking underneath in direction of windshield I could see it coming out underneath. It was coming out as I added it, but I was able to make it back home. Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? 1997 Chevy Silverado Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far? Some weeks earlier I had taken it to a mechanic, and they said there was no radiator leak and replaced the cap. I drove for weeks as long as I kept coolant and water in it. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Can a bad thermostat cause this/

Howdy from Tennessee, I'm Chris aka Moose. Who am I helping today? I'm glad you've come here to get help. I will do my best to get the answer you are looking for. I help many customers, so sometimes my replies are delayed, I will respond once available. I try to be online at 1-5 pm and 10 pm-5 am every day. Although the thermostat could be bad needing to be replaced. It would not be to blame for coolant added resulting in coolant actively leaking out. That would be a cracked part like the radiator or a part on the [engine](/topics-engine-chevy/), a leaking hose, faulty [water pump](/topics-water-pump/). You will need to find the source of the leak and get that addressed so the coolant level is no longer dropping. This should address this overheating concern Thank you for seeking us for help, I hope I provided what was needed. Press reply if you need to follow up. If you liked my answer please let me know so I can mark your question complete. Moose

Does that apply to adding water too?I cannot afford it. I better stick to this initial $1I liked your answer. Did you see my follow-up question?
Automotive Expert
Can you better explain what your asking here **Does that apply to adding water too?**

I added water not coolant, when i saw it coming out.
Automotive Expert
That is fine as long as the temps are not getting below 32 degrees. If they are then the water is freezing and that will ruin an engine and cooling system.

Could it be the water pump? If it is the engine how big of a repair?
Automotive Expert
Yes, the water pump is one of the things I mentioned prior that can leak. If the engine is cracked from freezing, it can be the freeze plugs now faulty or the engine is damaged beyond repair and it needs to be replaced.

What are freeze plugs?
Automotive Expert
Here is a picture of them [http://www.pasadenacertified.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/freeze-plugs.jpg](http://www.pasadenacertified.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/freeze-plugs.jpg)

Okay. What should be the order of checking things out?
Automotive Expert
Visually find the leak, step one Repair the leak, step two If you cannot find the leak then use a cooling system pressure tester to make it leak

Will it be safe to try to drive vehicle to the mechanic if needed?
Automotive Expert
As long as it does not overheat, then yes

Thank you for your help. I will need to cancel service, so that I don't get charged $34.00 for a month. How do I?
