The engine light blinking on and off means a severe misfire which can be due to either coolant or oil getting into the cylinder combustion chambers. If there is no sign of external oil or coolant leaks, you have a blown [head gasket](/topics-head-gasket-chevy/) at minimum and could also have leaking valve seals or piston rings The knock can also be from coolant getting into the cylinders and washing out the oil from the bearings. Thanks for using Just Answer and letting me help you. I hope I provided what you needed. If you find more help is still needed, let me know by listing out any remaining questions you have on this concern. I hope the remainder of your day is well.

externally you can see the engine oil leakingYeah and we drove the car ALOT with little to no oil after every drive you can smell the burning oil and coolant was dissappearing after a few days of regular driving.

HI Ok, the engine knock is likely wrist pin or bearing damage from driving with little to no oil and will require at least a lower end rebuild plus repairing the oil leak If coolant is not puddling on the ground below the vehicle, then it is a blown headgasket So you are looking at significant repairs at this point

Yeahhhh sooo you think I might need to dump the car or fix it myself
Automotive Expert
HI Either rebuild the engine, install a low mileage used engine, or cut your losses. I cannot advise on what is best course of action as that entirely depends on your financial situation and whether you want to invest the time and money to rebuild or replace the engine

in conclusion what all do you think needs to be repaired or replaced?
Automotive Expert
HI cause of external oil leak headgaskets lower rebuild - new rod and crank bearings, piston rings, and possibly crankshaft itself if scored badly
