Thanks for those details. Since you and your son are not savvy at doing diesel repairs. I do not recommend using a tuner or modifying the vehicle. Using a tuner often results in more frequent repairs and those repairs would be best done in the driveway DIY. It would be best to not use the tuner, and reassemble the vehicle back to stock since you live where MARTA is and they are going to do emissions testing. There are a gazillion different tuners. If you know the brand and model you should be able to go to their website to download the installation and removal directions. Thank you for seeking us for help, I hope I provided what was needed. Likely just an hour of labor to get the vehicle programmed back to stock. The parts and labor would be much higher though if the prior owner removed and altered a bunch of things.

I do this full time. I left the dealer in 2012. I only go back in when they are missing a couple of techs and need some help for a week or two.
