Greetings! I have a 2000 Chevy Suburban 1500. The model probably doesn't matter much to this issue, as it's about the A/C system. The A/C compressor went out. We got the new ACDelco replacement, swapped it out, pulled vacuum, and filled it up to specs (maybe just barely past spec). It cools perfectly now. The problem is that I occasionally hear a hammering sound when the car turns on with the fan engaged. I first heard it immediately after the replacement process
Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the Freon level?
There's no indicator, but I suspected a slight overfill of refrigerant when it first happened. I released a bit of pressure and the noise went away. But it still comes back now and then. It's really rare (mayne 1 in 20 times I start the car), and it goes away and won't come back if I just turn off the fan for a moment Yesterday I managed to isolate the noise (hard since it's so intermittent) There's a large hammering/vibration of the line between the condenser and the receiver/dryer
Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model of your '00 Chevy?
Suburban 1500 LS
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Yes, I do all my own mechanics. So far all I have done is try to isolate where the noise/hammering is happening and released a bit of the refrigerant pressure
Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
There are no leaks, and the dryer itself seems to do most of the shaking. I don't know why this piece of the A/C system would suddenly and intermittently do this. Nor do I know why it goes away with a simple off/on of the fan.

How much oil did you put in the system when you replaced the compressor?
Customer

Also it has rear A/C, so the compressor is a little larger than the base version (if that even matters to what happens between the condenser and receiverNot much oil added. It came pre-loaded, I just added a little dye, about 5-10 ml

There is a TSB pertaining to this issue. I suspect the oil charge could be incorrect . Here is the TSB.

If I'm reading that correctly, the fix is to flush the system and replace half the components. Seems excessive for an oil charge suspicion...Unfortunately the TSB isn't specific about where the noise comes from. Why would a compressor starved of oil cause a hammering after the evaporator instead of somewhere closer to the compressor?Apologies, not the evaporator. After the condenser. Still, why not closer to the compressor?Yesterday it hung around long enough for me to trace where the hammering was happening, but stopped when I closed the hood (impact vibration stopped it). The fan was still running. Note the AC control switch was not engaged (it's cold out), but the compressor clutch was engaged.

The clutch will engage if the defrost is on.
What I've seen personally on these as well, is the oil will hang out in the compressor and drain into it after sitting. The compressor will oil lock and you'll get that noise and vibration you're experiencing. The fix is to correct the oil charge.

I actually checked the defrost. The defrost switch was off, but this car has a handful of automatic features and it wouldn't surprise me if it had somehow engaged automatically.Okay... how do you correct the oil charge? Do you just add some? Or do I need to remove the compressor/drain/refill?

You've got to recover all of the refrigerant and drain/measure the oil.

Okay, essentially a reinstall of the compressor then. I'm not sure how soon I'll get to that. Thanks for the advice, Bart. Hopefully that does it.

No dice, I’m afraid. $100 and a lost Saturday, it’s hammering worse than before. I found the oil capacity is 11 ounces, so I pulled the compressor, drained it, and added just over 11 ounces and manually cycled the compressor 12 times before reinstalling the belt. Had to reattach the hoses to avoid oil spilling out. Refilled, it works great, but it hammers worse than ever while set to defrost. I’m starting to think it’s the dryer unit. This is frustrating.

Sounds like you've got a bad compressor.
Still not sure what you need?

Hi there - the story certainly doesn't make sense. Excessive fuel pressure (https://www.yourmechanic.com/question/fuel-rail-sensor-faulty-or-fuel-pressure-too-high-by-dee) won't "ruin an injector", although it will certainly leak and cause high fuel consumption, as well as a rough idle and rough running.
