Engine sputters and rpms shoot up at low speed. Park neutral good. Automatic. Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the car? Is it an automatic or a manual transmission? 180000. Automatic Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? 2006 Hyundai Sonata 3.3 v6 Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Sonata yourself? What have you tried so far? Yes. Replaced tps and both input and output speed sensors. Cleaned throttle body. Changed tranni fluid. Checked electrical connections. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Slams into Drive as well as reverse. But pretty normal at high speeds

Hello I'm right from just answer sorry to hear about your Hyundai issues as I know how frustrating this can be,If you see a phone call request you can just ignore that..... Have you had this scanned for any codes?

originally had a random misfire and throttle switch issue. Sorry I didn't write them down. Once I replaced sensors I erased codes and have not come back. That was three days go.Driven plenty dince as well
Automotive Expert
Ok I see, did you change plugs to or just the coils?

I changed the plugs but not the coils.

Okay I understand, a few things could cause this besides what you have replaced, and take manifold gasket leaking.. crankshaft positioning sensor or the wiring for it... or incorrect camshaft timingI would spray some brake cleaner or starting fluid around the intake gaskets while it is at idle and see if this makes the idle go even higher

I tried the brake cleaner with no change. Is there a way to test the tank position sensor? What other symptoms would bad timing cause?
Automotive Expert
Not really a good way to check the crankshaft positioning sensor if you have a proper scan tool you can watch it on the live data while you're cranking the engine or at idle and see if it is acting erratically, If it has a lot of miles on it it may have a timing tensioner broke and possibly jump time and would cause this rough idle as well do you hear any noises at all?

there’s a whining noise, a clacking noise,-and a ticking noise.all at low speeds and in drive and reverse only.
Automotive Expert
Okay there's a good chance it could be the timing chain has jumped It is somewhat common on these

No real pattern to noises. It’s like I’m driving a manual and late on the throttAlso the clacking noise comes from top end under valve cover and gets worse and louder until I let go of break and car lungesWould timing cause this as well?
Automotive Expert
timing could cause this, another thing that these are known for are the flex plates crack on theseIf the flex plate is cracked it would be losing signal through the crankshaft positioning sensor and making the noise as well as the misfire and jumping

Is that the flywheel?
Automotive Expert
the flex plate is for an automatic transmission The flywheel is for a manual but yes that is what I'm talking aboutThis sounds more like your problem to be honest it would definitely cause the noise and the rough running because of the crankshaft positioning sensor cannot be stable in the cracked flex plate would be making the noise you are hearing

Gotcha. The only way to check this is to get into transmission and do a visual?
Automotive Expert
Yeah...may be best to try to get starter out and peek in and look with a light , maybe rotate crank over by hand and watch it, it's probably cracked, average mileage for this problem is right at 190k

Gotcha.ill check it out. Thank you very much. I'll rate now.

Your very welcome, glad to help, appreciate it, best of luck take care

What others are asking

What type of transmission fluid should I use?
Just like engine oil, it’s important to have the right type of transmission fluid in your car. Adding the wrong type can be very bad. For automatic transmissions, Honda recommends using Honda ATF DW-1. For manual transmissions, Honda recommends manual...
Electrical problems with speedometer, lights and tachometer on 2011 Mini Cooper Countryman
Hello. Yes it is likely that there was a fuse blown (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/fuse-replacement) when installing the battery. The fuses that are of the most likely concern are F21,F40, F9, and F5. I recommend checking the wiring under those fuses as well....

Hello. Vibrations can be caused by a wide variety of issues. If they are happening under all of those circumstances it may be possible that they are suspension related. Perhaps some of the suspension components, or even the tires, have...
Stalls when turning or at a stop
Hi there. The first step is to check for any problem codes (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-to-read-and-understand-check-engine-light-codes-by-jason-unrau) stored by engine management. This can save a lot of time money when diagnosing drive-ability problems. Most auto parts stores will do this for free. Several problems...
Car dies, check engine light with codes P0341 and P0346 (camshaft position sensor). Will not start until vehicle cools down.
Hi there. The codes p0341 (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0341-obd-ii-trouble-code-camshaft-position-sensor-circuit-range-performance-by-jay-safford) and p0346 (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0346-obd-ii-trouble-code-camshaft-position-sensor-a-circuit-range-performance-bank-2-by-valerie-johnston) are both related to the camshaft position sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/camshaft-position-sensor-replacement) and are showing that the sensor has lost communication to the computer. what would a bad transmission control solenoid do?
The fault will depend on exactly which solenoid has failed. Typically a modern transmission will have shift solenoids, a lockup solenoid, a torque converter clutch solenoid, and possibly a solenoid for electronic pressure control. The more common symptoms of a...
