I have a 2000 suzuki grand vitara v6 5 speed manual transmission rear wheel drive. A couple weeks ago it made a loud clunking noise I stopped because i thought it was my tire. It stopped and then last weekend when i was driving and no matter what gear i was in it was still sounding like i was downshifting. Then yesterday in a parking lot had to stop for someone crossing and when i put it in 1st gear and went to release the clutch my car my the worst noise ever and the clutch wouldnt release and car stalled. Tried again and engine just revved and wouldnt move there was a very loud POP and when i went to push it into a parking spot the car would only go a little bit then stop and wouldnt go any further without making a loud popping sound. What could that be?
Mechanic's Assistant: Has the clutch been slipping? Are you having any trouble shifting?
I havent had to much problems shifting I would say maybe 2 months or so ago something happened to my shifter. whenever it is put into any gear it would stay in gear no popping out but my shifter was loose i could move it around even with it being in gear.
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Grand Vitara yourself? What have you tried so far?
It just completely stopped yesterday. I am trying to figure out what is wrong with it so i not buy and fix something that is not needed. So I havent tried anything.
Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
I regularly check all my fluids and there is no leaks i checked my front and rear differentials to make sure they were good on gear oil and they were fine also.

Its super easy to push in but i was able to shift it into reverse to drive it backwards and then shifted it back into first gear.Last weekend when i notice there was a problem when i was driving it from 1st gear to 4th gear it sounded like i was downshifting even though i was in a higher gear.

But now its impossible to drive, what happens if you have the clutch pressed full down can you roll the car forward smoothly

Okay if you press the clutch down and it will roll freely then the transmission is the problem it's stuck in a gear.

Looks like you found your problem the rear differential has failed on you .
Lift the rear ended wheels of the ground and make safe with stand axles and check where the drive shaft goes to the differential for play have some one spin the wheels and see where the play is but now sound surely to be the rear differential.
Keep me posted.

I went out and put the rear end on jack stands and there was play where the drive shaft bolts to the differential and spun the tires and all the noise is coming from right inside the differential.

Remove the right side wheel and check the Parking brake shoes might only be a problem with the brakes first check this also check the right side and if both sides are ok the problem with tbd differential. Greg
