Q: Brakes make a swoosh sound

asked by on May 17, 2016

I am thinking about buying a Prius and I test drove one at the dealership. I noticed that whenever I pressed the brakes, I heard swoosh sound. Almost as if air was being released. Does that seem normal to you? Right now I have a 2007 Prius and it does not make that sound. The dealership say it is a normal thing for hybrids.

Things change as technology advances. Most hybrids have a regenerative braking system to charge up the hybrid battery. If Toyota has changed the design of the regenerative braking system since the year of Prius that you own, it is very possible that the noise you hear could be a normal part of its operation. I would recommend test driving one or two more newer Prius’ and see if they make the same noises. If they do, the sound must be normal. If not, you were lied to by the spokesperson at the dealership.

If and when you do decide on a new car, consider having a mobile mechanic come out to the location of the vehicle to perform a thorough pre-purchase inspection.

How do I know if I need to do a tire balancing or a car aligment in my car?
You will need to have the right axle and bearing checked. It sounds like an axle causing the vibration, but they usually do not cause a tire to wear out. The tire will wear from a bad bearing, strut, or...

I purchased a flood damaged car and replaced the engine and on the computer it's saying system running lean. What does that mean?
Hi there. When the computer says that the bank 1 or bank 2 is lean, it is referring that the cylinders do not have enough fuel to burn. Check the injectors (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/fuel-injector-replacement) and see if they are plugged up. Look...
The sound has stopped working from my aux input in my fusion. It says line in but will not play any sound. Any advice??
It sounds like you may be having an issue with the auxilary cord itself. These cords often times fail internally causing one or more speakers to stop playing sound. I would recommend getting a new aux cord to rule out...

It won't start. I've narrowed it down to the electrical. I can't get a spark out of the distributor. I have a 1996 Geo Prizm.
Hi there. Typically when you are not getting spark at the tip of the plug wire, and nothing at the distributor, the next point to inspect would be the ignition coil - followed by the ignition relay - followed by...
Grinding/rubbing sound in rear drum break, replaced assembly inside and lathes drum, sound continues and louder as speed increases
The noise may not be coming from the brakes at all and is coming from the rear hub bearings. Try to remove rear calipers and rotor and turn hub to see if you feel any binding. If you do then...
