Mechanic's Assistant: Okay, I'll connect you to the Mechanic to help find that for your Saturn Relay. Before I do, is there anything else you want him to know?
It's a 2005 Audi I'm having all the symptoms the clicking I used to but now it's not saying anything

Hello, my name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I will be helping you with your question today. I've been working on Audis for over 30 years now, so I should be able to help you through this. Please understand that some of my suggestions may require special diagnostic tools and equipment that many home mechanics may not have, but are often required. So, my first question is whether you're planning on performing your own repairs, or are you wanting to be armed with information before bringing it into your mechanic?
**Also, the site automatically prompts for a phone call. It's very rare that I'm available by phone, so let's hold off on that for now. If needed after we exchange some information, I will do my best to take the time for the call.**
Couple of questions for you
1) do you have a VIN available?
2) there is no starter relay on these cars, so what troubleshooting have you done so far?
3) what is the current battery voltage?
4) have you tested for a start signal at the small wire to the starter?

Did anything specifically precede that message? Or did you just turn the car off one day, and the next day, it wouldn't start, and you saw that message?
And do you have an Audi specific scan tool to scan both modules 01 and 02 for fault codes?
Customer

Well it had been when I go to start it I would have to turn the key back because it was clicking and everything just like when it says if it's a relay but right now we are working on it and now it says you have to push clutch in to start and it's an automatic

Ok, got that. And what is the battery voltage right now? This is critically important. This will have to be tested with a digital multimeter
Customer

I have it on a jumper box right now so the voltage is good
AudiDoc

Automotive Expert
That's not always the case. If the battery has crashed to under 6v, and you have a jumper box on it, it still won't start the car.
Customer

No I didn't mean to small jumper box I have charger box one that you plug into the wall so the voltage is right when I turn the car and I press the the the check button it it says the voltage is good

Ok, I do understand what you're saying but when the charger box is on, it's always going to show 12.6v or more, and most of those meters on the charger boxes don't reflect actual battery voltage, and none of them can perform a load test on the battery. I'm not trying to be difficult, but these symptoms always require detailed step by step diagnosis, and right now, battery load test is unknown.
If the actual battery capacity right this second is 300A or less, then the car will not start, and from what you mention of clicking in the past, we really need to focus on battery condition.

Okay it's impossible to text you back tomorrow afternoon because my mechanic is getting ready to shut down for the evening and I'll text you back tomorrow afternoon to see if you can help us figure out what's going on

Okay we got the starter out and we got the other one in but the problem we're having is on the screen it says when I go to turn the key to start it on a screen that says push clutch to start engine but it's an automatic there is no clutch

Why did you replace the starter without doing the testing that I suggested? I still don't know results of a battery load test, which was the most important first step, and no scan results.
Customer

Well the starter was definitely bad I mean it was on the car since my daughter-in-law bought the car but it started Stephanie bad it is it froze up is it wasn't clicking out or anything right but the new starter works it's just you know it says push clutch to start car when you go to turn the key and I don't know what is that a special code
AudiDoc

Automotive Expert
Ok, got all of that. So you say that the new starter works? Meaning the car starts and runs fine now?
And those codes are read using a VW/Audi scan tool like this: [https://store.ross-tech.com/shop/vchv2\_ent/](https://store.ross-tech.com/shop/vchv2_ent/)
I would have to know faults and component coding in order to determine why that message is being displayed
Customer
Okay I will take care of that tomorrow and I will get back to you about the same time tomorrow and let you know exactly what the codes are
AudiDoc

Ok, so you have a VW/Audi scan tool that can scan both modules? Just need to be sure, as a generic Autozone or other OBD2 scanner will not do this.

being that my next car is going to be an Audi also would it be worth it for me to just get one of those you code machines for myself to have

Customer

Yeah it runs fine but he has to start it with the jump wire up under the car so we're trying to find out the code to keep that from coming up push clutch to start whenever we turn the key
AudiDoc
Automotive Expert
ok, got that. Not sure which wire is being used to start the car, or if something was added aftermarket, but that definitely shouldn't have to be done. So glad it's now starting at least, and once you have that list of fault codes, I can continue.
