And instead of just diving into the expensive repair I had called for, he doubled-checked the diagnosis that had been made by other mechanics, because the potential alternate causes of the problem had vastly less expensive solutions. (Note: expensive was not the fault of Your Mechanic. They were actually the cheapest bid of every mobile mechanic in the city even though the part they provided was top of the line, new, not rebuilt.)
