What is the Suspension Air Bag all about?

Suspension air bags are designed to keep your vehicle from swaying, sagging or otherwise delivering a rough ride when you have it loaded. By adding extra support to your current suspension, your truck or SUV should give you a much smoother ride, even with additional weight. Some upscale SUV’s have factory-installed suspension air bags that automatically level the load and ride height. They are controlled by suspension height sensors that provide information to the body control module, which directs the proper air pressure from a compressor to the air bag. If there is a leak in an air bag, or if your air bag pressure will not adjust, it may need to be replaced.

Keep in mind:

  • Except for some upscale vehicles, most trucks and SUVs don’t come with suspension air bags as factory components. If you didn’t add them on yourself, you probably don’t have them.
  • Incorrect tire pressure can mimic the symptoms of a weak suspension air bag.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle is lifted and supported on jack stands and the rear wheels are removed
  • The defective suspension air bag is removed
  • The new suspension air bag is installed
  • The tires are reinstalled and the vehicle is taken off the jack stands
  • The air suspension is activated and tested for proper operation

Our recommendation:

If your suspension is riding rough, it’s a good idea to have your suspension and suspension air bags looked at. Air bags are typically made of rubber and can be subject to environmental weathering. If you suspect your suspension air bag is leaking, have one of our expert mechanics diagnose them.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Suspension Air Bag?

  • Vehicle rides rough or is bouncy
  • When carrying a load, the suspension feels loose or wanders

How important is this service?

The suspension air bags in your vehicle aid in proper control and a comfortable ride. If your air bags are not working as designed, you may experience control problems when driving on the highway. Have the suspension air bags repaired as soon as you are able.

Honda Ridgeline V6-3.5L - Brake Pads Replacement (Rear) - Reseda, California
Another great experience with Luis and YourMechanic. Had gotten a recommendation from my usual dealer to replace the rear brake pads, and when I first used YourMechanic a few weeks ago, Luis (who was my first YourMechanic mechanic) diagnosed the same potential concern. Got a quote that was almost 20% below the dealer quote, so elected to move forward, and was given the choice of an earlier appointment with a different mechanic or waiting a day for Luis to be available. After doing such a good job the first time, I waited the day, and am glad I did. Luis showed up early and, after informing me that an optional service I had requested (based on my dealer's recommendation) was likely NOT needed (how often does a mechanic tell you you need FEWER services?!), he got straight to work. He showed me the system and explained what was and was not required. I left him alone to work and before I knew it, he was knocking on the door that he was done. Easily saved me 5-6 hours and a whole bunch of hassle (and some money) compared with dropping the car off at the dealer, waiting or getting picked up/dropped off... Luis is pretty much now my go-to guy - why deal with taking your car somewhere when a nice, qualified, courteous mechanic can come to your door.

Honda Ridgeline V6-3.5L - Service Battery/cables - Sacramento, California
Kevin did a great job again. He was very thorough and understanding when I was picky about some of the fluids required for the job and even went and got the genuine Honda transmission fluid from the Honda dealer as I requested, even though I already had him doing a lot today. But he got it all done in one day!

Honda Ridgeline V6-3.5L - Brake Master Cylinder - Charlotte, North Carolina
I believed it was a Master cylinder problem. Brakes still have issues . Perhaps it is a bad replacement part.
