What is the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable all about?

The parking brake cable is a thin, steel cable that connects the parking brake lever to the parking brake shoes. It is located underneath the car. When you pull the lever, this cable enables the parking brake shoes to press against the rotor or the drum, creating the friction that keeps the car from rolling. It is just like using the brake pedal, but in this case, you are using the parking brake cable instead of brake fluids to apply the pressure. Over time the cable can rust and break. If the parking brake cable is broken, the car will roll even when the parking brake has been engaged.

Keep in mind:

The brake drums or pads often need to be removed to access the emergency brake cable. During this time, the drums and pads should be inspected to see if they also need to be replaced.

How it's done:

  • Remove and replace parking brake cable.
  • Adjust parking brake.
  • Test parking brake.

Our recommendation:

Always apply the parking brake when the car is parked. This will keep the parking brake adjusted properly. Your mechanic should inspect the parking brake cable during every brake service. They should also periodically spray rust penetrant chemical on the cable to prevent rust from building up.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable?

  • Parking brake does not hold car.
  • Parking brake does not release.
  • Parking brake warning light is on.

How important is this service?

All services associated with proper function of your brakes are important. In addition to safety issues, ignoring small repairs can quickly lead to more serious (and more expensive) problems.

Chevrolet Tracker V6-2.5L - Pre-purchase Car Inspection - Sacramento, California
I recently purchased a 2004 Chevy Tracker. Before purchasing, I wanted to have someone thoroughly inspect the vehicle to make sure it wasn't a lemon, and to notify me of what I would need to take care of in the near future, so I could use that for negotiating the price. I contacted YourMechanic at the last second and they responded immediately, able to accommodate my appointment. I was more than satisfied with the service I received from Kevin, the mechanic they sent to do my inspection. He was very thorough, went above and beyond, and made sure to inform me of even the most minor things. Once the inspection was complete, we reviewed the positives and negatives and I decided to purchase the vehicle. I was even able to talk the dealer down $500 from the asking price to cover some of the things that needed attention immediately. The fact that Kevin even had knowledge of the dealers in the area aided my decision. It made me more comfortable purchasing from the dealer himself, even though I had already had a good feeling about the guy and had read previous positive reviews about him and his dealership. The reports (online and printable) I received were amazingly detailed, listed reminders of what I needed to be aware of, and even rated the vehicles condition to give reference. And they were available immediately. YourMechanic is also VERY affordable. I was getting inspection bids of $150 and up, but only paid $98 for this service. Thank you YourMechanic and Kevin. You all certainly exceeded expectations. I will most definitely use your service in the future and recommend you to others.
