When a vehicle seems to lose power, or is not getting enough power when you stomp down on the gas pedal it is not only annoying, it can be dangerous. Pulling out onto a highway or across a busy intersection, only to have the vehicle hesitate or stall can lead to a perilous situation.

In most cases a lack of power can be traced back to a fuel system malfunction. Issues can range from a leaking fuel line to a bad fuel pump. Regardless of the cause, an engine that is not getting enough power should be serviced immediately.

How this system works:

The fuel system supplies fuel to the engine. The combustion chamber is where fuel is mixed with air, atomized and then ignited. Fuel systems vary depending on the vehicle but they all have the same basic components.

Fuel is stored in the gas tank and a fuel pump pushes fuel through the fuel lines to a fuel filter and then into the fuel injectors. On older vehicles the fuel is delivered to the carburetor and throttle body injection system. The fuel injectors spray fuel into the cylinder where it mixes with air and ignites during compression. The resulting explosion drives the pistons.

Common reasons for this to happen:

  • Defective Fuel Pump or Filter: The fuel pump supplies the engine with fuel and if it malfunctioning the car will experience a loss of power. Over time fuel pumps can wear out or become clogged with contaminants, which prevents it from pushing fuel to the injectors. This can cause the vehicle to sputter at high speeds, stall, or hesitate during acceleration. A clogged fuel filter can also cause these problems. Fuel filters should be changed on a regular schedule.

  • Clogged or Bad Fuel Injector: Like a fuel pump, injectors can become clogged due to fuel contaminates, hydrocarbons and additives. A clogged injector will degrade performance and the engine will feel like it is not getting enough power. It can also make the vehicle hard to start, idle roughly and effect fuel consumption.

  • Leaking Fuel Line: A leaking fuel line will not provide enough fuel to the injectors, which can result in a lack of power. If there is a strong smell of fuel in the cabin of the car or a puddle of fuel underneath the vehicle a fuel line issue is usually the problem. This should be addressed immediately.

  • Vacuum Leak: A vacuum leak can affect the computers ability to properly regulate the fuel to air ratio, which can cause a lack of power. In most cases, a vacuum leak will trigger the Check Engine light to come on.

  • Dirty Airflow Sensor: An airflow sensor detects the mass of air that is entering the fuel injection system and passes that information to the engine’s computer so it can correctly deliver the right amount of fuel. A failing or dirty airflow sensor will send the wrong signals to the computer. A lack of power during acceleration is a common symptom. This problem will also trigger a Check Engine light.

Clogged Catalytic Converter: If your catalytic convertor is clogged or starting to fail it can prevent the proper flow of air through the engine. This can lead to a loss of power. The vehicle will also run hotter than usual.

What to expect:

A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the source and cause of the lack of power, and will then provide a detailed inspection report that includes the scope and cost of the necessary repairs.

How important is this service?

A vehicle that is not getting enough power should be inspected as soon as possible. It can be dangerous to drive, and fuel system problems that are not fixed can often lead to more expensive repairs as more components are affected.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 V8-4.8L - Brake Pads Replacement (Front, Rear) - Fort Lauderdale, Florida
I have owned a car for just about 25 years and for those same 25 years I have looked, unsuccessfully until today I might add, for a mechanic that I felt really cared about me, and now my family, and not just how much they could up-sell someone with very little knowledge of vehicles. After an awful week of rude and nasty mechanics trying to figure out how much they could charge my wife and I for repairs that we didn't even need, we began to feel like we would never be treated fairly by a mechanic because we didn't know enough about cars to question things we were being told. And then by some small miracle a friend told us about Omar from a company called Your Mechanic. I was extremely skeptical as one of our disasters earlier in the week was by another mechanic that was supposed to come to our house to do the repairs and instead decided to no call no show. But I was running out of options and time. So we scheduled an appointment for Omar through Your Mechanic and my wife and I cannot say enough good things about our incredible experience with Omar. He immediately reassured us that he would only be doing the work that needed to be done and we could expect the truck done in a few hours. I immediately felt all of the bad experiences from the previous week become a distant memory and this was all thanks to Omar and his incredible professionalism while speaking to us. I never once felt as if he looked down on us because of our lack of knowledge about cars. He went out of his way to make sure we not only understood everything but more importantly we were comfortable with his diagnosis and solutions. After we checked with him if he needed anything else from us he said no I have your phone number if I need anything I can call you otherwise I will let you know in a couple hours when I'm done. My wife and I then turned and began to head inside at which point I looked at her and said "unless we come out here and he is gone and the truck is in a bunch of pieces in the parking lot, then I am very confident we have finally found a trustworthy, honest, reliable and genuinely decent human being to be our families mechanic!" And to no surprise that is exactly what my wife and I are confident we finally found today after looking for 25 years. What some people think, and rightly so, is the hardest thing to find nowadays and that is a extremely knowledgeable, reliable, honest, trustworthy and genuinely a good human being to be their mechanic. When he looked at an estimate that we had received from a national chain he told us that we did not need to have the rear calipers replaced, as we were told by the chain, and that saved us another $150. So the national chain's initial estimate was right around $1500 and Your Mechanic's estimate was about half of that. Add to which Omar saved us the other $150 by letting us know the rear calipers didn't need to be replaced at this time because as he stated they still had a little meat on them so he took that off. How easy it would have been for Omar to leave that charge on their knowing full well we had already signed off on it because, once again, we know very little about cars. Needless to say, thanks to Omar we have found our families new mechanic. And he will be as long as we have cars and he is available. But I would imagine the more people that use him, the harder it is going to be to book him. Because everyone knows you cannot put a price tag on a damn good mechanic and that's exactly what we have found in Omar. Thank you Your Mechanic for sending us such an incredible representative of your company. You all should be very proud to have Omar on your team and representing your company the way he does. What a blessing he has been and will continue to be for the Zorovich family for many years to come. Along with ALL of our family, friends and colleagues...

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 V6-4.3L - Not able to change gears - Portland, Oregon
Jeremiah was friendly, professional and arrived early. I was fully prepared for a late arrival because that’s how these things go but he proved to be one of the good ones. He had good recommendations for future service after the diagnostics part, was friendly and apathetic about my situation which was much appreciated, even during the beginning of an ungodly heatwave and very busy day of his own. I highly recommend Jeremiah.
