The moment you are given your car title, it’s a wise idea to store it somewhere safe that isn’t your vehicle. However, over time it’s very common to lose the title or even have it stolen. Now suppose you want to sell your vehicle or transfer ownership? Unfortunately, this isn’t possible without your title. Here’s the good news, you are able to apply for a duplicate car title if yours should be stolen or lost.
In the state of Oklahoma, this process can be done through the Motor Vehicle Division of the Oklahoma Tax Commission. The process is relatively quick and easy, and can be done by mail or in person. Here's a look at the steps involved.
By mail
Should you decide that applying by mail is the most convenient for you then you will need to download, print, and fill out the Application for Duplicate Title (Form 701-7). If you don't have a printer at home, you can pick this form up at your local tag agency.
Pop it in the mail to the address listed on the form. Keep in mind that you'll need copies of your ID and registration included in the package.
There is a fee of $11 for the duplicate title, plus a $1.50 handling fee. This should be made in the form of a check, which can be made payable to the Oklahoma Tax Commission.
In person
You will need to fill out Form 701-7 then take it to any tag agency. Be sure to bring with you ID and your registration.
There is a fee of $11 when applying in person.
