Your car title is a very important document. This is your legal proof that you are the registered owner of your vehicle. Why is this so important? Well if you have any plans to sell your vehicle or transfer ownership, you’ll need to be in possession of your car title. With that said life happens, things get lost, and even stolen sometimes. So what happens if that item that goes missing is your car title? That’s when it is time to apply for a duplicate car title.
In the state of North Carolina you can go about this process through the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. The process has been created to be smooth and fast so that it’s not a stressful undertaking for you. Here are the steps involved in the process.
In person
The process can be done in person by visiting your local Division of Motor Vehicles office. Begin by filling out the Application for a Duplicate Title (Form MVR-4), which needs to be notarized.
You will also need your valid driver's license with you, and your VIN number.
There is a $15 fee for a duplicate car title. This fee can be paid in person by check, money order, or cash.
By mail
Once again you will need to have Form MVR-4 filled out, and you will need to provide your VIN number.
There is a fee of $15 for the duplicate title.
Your information can be mailed to the address on the form.
