Interested in starting an automotive technician job? If so, you should know that this can be a very rewarding career. There is plenty of job stability and growth, and as new technologies emerge, you’ll have the chance to learn and grow. While the national average annual salary for mechanics is roughly $40,000, the average auto mechanic salary in Kentucky is $34,820. This is lower than the average, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good option for you. The key is to make yourself the most appealing candidate for higher paying automotive technician jobs.
Get educated first
Before doing anything else, you need to complete an auto mechanic school program. These are generally relatively short, often as brief as six months. However, there are longer programs available, as well. These courses will teach you the basics of auto repair and service, allowing you to start an entry-level position after you graduate and earn your certification. You can complete these courses at a number of community colleges and technical schools in Kentucky, including the following:
- Jefferson Community and Technical College
- Elizabethtown Community and Technical College
- West Kentucky Community and Technical College
- Bluegrass Community and Technical College
- Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College
Completing a certificate program gives you the basic skills and knowledge needed in this career. However, this is not the end of your education. While you can start working as an auto mechanic now, you still need to learn more. The best way to do that is to pursue your ASE certifications. You can earn certification in a number of different areas, each of which makes you a better mechanic, and allows you to earn a higher automotive salary.
There’s also the possibility of going to work for a branded auto dealership and completing dealership certification. This type of certification is offered to employed technicians at brand-specific dealerships (Ford, Honda, Toyota, etc.) and is designed to help you learn more about the automaker’s specific technology and vehicle designs. Once you complete the training, you’ll be that much more employable and able to earn even more.
Supplement your income with work as a mobile mechanic
Once you’ve gotten your education and started the ASE certification process, consider where you want to work, and where you might make the most money while really enjoying the work that you do. There’s a very rewarding career awaiting you.
While there are many career options for mechanics, one option you might consider is working with YourMechanic as a mobile mechanic. YourMechanic technicians earn up to $60 an hour and complete all work onsite at the car owner's location. As a mobile mechanic, you control your schedule, set your service area, and serve as your own boss. Learn more and apply.
