In a typical exhaust, most of the pipes are welded together. Whether your manufacturer went a different route or you’ve got an aftermarket exhaust on the car, an exhaust clamp may have been used to join two pipes together. There are several different types of exhaust clamps available, but perhaps the most common is a U-clamp, which features a U-shaped bolt. It’s designed to secure a male and female exhaust pipe together and prevent exhaust leaks. Other types on the market include narrow band clamps, hanger clamps, V-band clamps, band clamps and lap band clamps. If an exhaust clamp is broken, sections of the pipe may come apart and exhaust parts may hang low underneath.
It is important to repair exhaust leaks as soon as possible, because exhaust fumes are not only noxious but deadly. Exhaust leaks will also cause you to fail your emissions test. Replace any exhaust components that are worn out or damaged. This includes your catalytic converter and any oxygen sensors. If you suspect an exhaust clamp is broken, have one of our expert mechanics inspect and repair your exhaust.
Having a fully functional exhaust system is essential for both your health and the environment. Exhaust gases are noxious and harmful, and if they are not being vented properly through the muffler (and burned in the catalytic converter), you could be putting yourself at risk.
