As your engine operates, it creates exhaust fumes – a mixture of used gases and other elements. Most of these are burned up by the catalytic converter in the exhaust system, but some are not. The gases are recirculated through the engine to be burned again. This not only reduces emissions, but helps to provide better fuel economy (by ensuring all the power in gasoline vapors is utilized). There needs to be a way to recirculate those gases into the manifold. That’s the job of the backpressure transducer. You might be more familiar with this component as the EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation valve).
There are two types of backpressure transducers used on today’s cars. The most common is the positive backpressure type, while the less common is the negative backpressure type. As you might imagine, they work in opposite ways, but both rely on the backpressure of the exhaust system.
Over time and through normal use, your backpressure transducer is exposed to not only high heat, but lots of exhaust gas, which carries carbon. Carbon builds up within the valve itself, restricting airflow through the system. In some cases, the carbon can be cleaned by a professional, but in others, the buildup is so severe that the entire valve must be replaced.
Over time, carbon will build up within the backpressure transducer, limiting its effectiveness and the vehicle's operation as a result. Eventually, the backpressure transducer will need to be replaced. Have it inspected by one of our expert mechanics who will determine if the port simply needs to be cleaned, or if replacement is required. You’ll also need to have it replaced to pass your emissions test.
Without a working backpressure transducer, your EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system will not function properly. This will have a negative effect on engine operation, as well as your emissions. If you suspect there’s a problem with your EGR valve, have it inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
