Mechanic's Assistant: Do you know the code? Did you check the fuses?
No. I don’t have a scanner but the auto parts store has one and where are the fuses?
Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Jetta yourself? What have you tried so far?
I want to fix it myself and I haven’t done anything yet. I don’t know where to start
Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
It is sputtering like it is running very rough

Hello Beth, Alright, most likely the problem is due to spark plugs, or coil packs, or a combination of both, as the engine is likely misfiring causing the rough running and blinking check engine light.
Any local independent shop should be able to handle that repair in my opinion. If you have one closer than 60 miles to you. It's not a overly hard job on this engine.

Ok so is it difficult to change the spark plugs? Where are they located? If it's the coil packs can I do that too?

I would start with the plugs first, if you stop by a local auto parts store they can scan it to double check my theory, but at that mileage it's likely either coil packs or plugs or combination of both. But I would start with the spark plugs first.

Ok. So can I just text this number back after I have it scanned?

Coil packs are on top of the engine, under the cover, right up top. You'll need basic hand tools and a 5/8 plug socket to get them out.
Yes, you can come back here and type in this chat box and I will respond asap later if you need to ask anything else. Thank you!

You might want to try watching my video "How to Fix a Car That Idles Poorly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQpPcdvSBks)." You just take the plastic plenum that goes from the air filter to the intake and get some throttle body cleaner. Spray the...
When it comes to across-the-board codes being set such as this, it is usually a result of something "upstream" creating the condition to set all these codes. For instance, it is rare for both O2 sensors to fail at exactly...
Hi there. Through your research you probably discovered that there are multiple causes of a rough idle and the Check Engine Light beyond the VVT solenoid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-variable-valve-timing-vvt-solenoid). If you replace the second bank solenoid, it may improve your issue, but...
I would first check to see if the PCM has set any diagnostic trouble codes, including pending codes. Codes can be downloaded and evaluated by YourMechanic (http://www.yourmechanic.com) in the context of a Check Engine Light diagnostic (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/check-engine-light-is-on-inspection). The camshaft and...
Hi there. Sounds like the exhaust heat shields are loose on the exhaust system and rattling underneath the vehicle. Go under the vehicle and check to see which shield is vibrating and tighten them up. If the heat shield (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-making-a-noise-inspection)...
Hi there. That's a very good question. The one you replace is the one that is faulty, as both sensors work together to take measurements and reading of the fuel system and exhaust to fine-tune the fuel to air ratio....
