It rattles when in idle. I just replaced the [timing belt](/topics-timing-belt-toyota/) the timing belt as I thought that was the culprit but I’ve come to find that it wasn’t and my car still has a loud rattle Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the timing belt? Have you ever had to change it before? This is the first time changing it. There are probably only 10 kilometres on it Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? Toyota Highlander 2004 Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Highlander yourself? What have you tried so far? No I’m not I have a mechanic that I take it to. So far we’ve just done the timing belt Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? No I think that’s it.

Welcome to JustAnswer Mechanical Support! I amCustomerand I will be Investigating and Supporting your question today. I understand it can be really frustrating when your auto is not working an expected but don't worry as I am here to help! I may need further information, however, if required I will let you know! Sorry to hear your having issues with your vehicle I will try to assist you. Have you replaced the timing belt tensioner and the idler pulley as well ? When does the noise appear when idling with car stationary or driving ? Check the oil level make sure it is correct level. It could be one of those items I have mentioned above or could be a sticking camshaft lifter or [water pump](/topics-water-pump-toyota/) or at worst case the crank shaft big end bearing.

My oil was just changed last week so the levels are good. Yes the tensioner and pulley were also replaced. The rattle only happens when I'm stopped at a light with my car in drive or when it's parked but running. Once it's moving it doesn't make a noise

Is the noise 100% from the [engine](/topics-engine-toyota/) as worn clutch plate springs can cause this noise and will go away whilst driving it.

it is definitely from the engine
Automotive Expert
Possibly the water pump bearing, [alternator](/topics-alternator-toyota/) bearing or sticking hydraulic lifter.

Is there anyway for you to narrow it down or should I take it to an in person mechanic
Automotive Expert
You can use a long screwdriver like a stethoscope to check the bearings on the alternator and water pump if they are accesable.
