Good morning Lucy, it's nice to meet you.
Sorry you are dealing with this.
It sounds like either the exhaust pipe is broken or the exhaust manifold. It's likely up at the front of the [engine](/topics-engine-toyota/) since it's coming in through the vents. Is the car a 6 cylinder or 4 cylinder?

6 cylinderI am not sure which one of the manifolds it could be

If you can look at them, you might see which one is split or cracked. It''s possible the flange on the front exhaust pipe has broken off as well. You might want to take it to an exhaust shop and have them take a look. Even if you do the repair yourself, if they can get it up on a lift and check it, most will give you a free estimate. That's if you don't see any cracks from under the hood.

Did you replace the upper intake or the lower where it bolts to the cylinder heads?
Customer

Upper intake, how do I reach the lower one where its behind engine not the by the [radiator](/topics-radiator-toyota/)

The lower intake is under the upper intake. The gasket set you had is likely for both parts of the intake, upper and lower.
To remove the rear exhaust manifold, you likely have to work from under the car.

Is the lower and upper intake attached togetherOr is the lower intake the same as rear exhaust manifold

These are 2 separate pieces the intake manifold is where the fuel and air is coming into the engine.
The exhaust manifold is where the exhaust leaves the engine after combustion.
They have nothing in common other then being called manifolds.

The service manual doesn't seem to have a diagram of it, so I am sending this photo, I have circled the upper intake manifold, the lower intake is below it.
Customer

Would that be the lower

Yes, that's the lower intake manifold. You should or usually you will have 2 metal gaskets where it seals to the heads.
