Loud exhaust noise could be due to deterioration or breakage of the internal baffles in components such as the resonator and muffler as well as leaks at pipe joints or even at the manifold on the engine. To determine the full extent of the repairs required requires an on site inspection and that inspection can be performed on a mobile basis right at your location. To schedule that service please use YourMechanic’s exhaust noise diagnostic service request page. With regard to the check engine light, typically if the light illuminates there will be stored trouble codes that can be downloaded. If you schedule a mechanic for the exhaust work, I’m sure he or she will be happy to read the codes and assist you in understanding what they mean as well as give you an idea of the required diagnostic and possible repairs. Exhaust leaks (not to mention the extreme noise you mention) are dangerous and so repairing the exhaust system should be your first priority.
