Tow haul light started flashing. Never slips when driving, but when taking off it will lag then take off. Here recently reverse went out. I put it in reverse or neutral and it drives forward. It drives just fine in drive but the tow haul light will start flashing and I'll lose overdrive. People tell me to just get a new tranny, but could it be something more simple? I ran the codes and I have a speed sensor and shift solenoid A B AND E acting up. Could that be my problem with no reverse or do I just need to get a new tranny??? Hoping for the best.
My car has 180000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.
If you have no reverse gear, it’s probably pointless to diagnose the other issues. A known, common issue in this transmission (you probably have the Ford 5R110) is breakage of a snap ring on the Low/Reverse one way clutch. That may be why you have no reverse. Since this transmission was introduced in 2003, there have been innumerable major upgrades in internal parts, clutch materials, the valve body and so forth. With the miles on the transmission that you have and the problems you are having, combined with the real opportunity to install a significantly upgraded, rebuilt transmission, I would just go ahead and have your transmission PROFESSIONALLY re-built (or do it yourself; it’s not difficult at all) but that assumes that you are able to link up with a shop that has a specialization in this particular transmission and thus knows of ALL the upgrades out there on the market that should be incorporated into the re-build. In transmission rebuilding, incorporation of re-designed parts and all of the fixes for the many glitches that came to light in the years AFTER the transmission went into commercial service is the key to obtaining the best re-building outcome. So, if you can find a good shop (they are out there; you just have to do the research; you might contact Triple Edge Performance in Indiana for leads on Ford rebuilders; Triple Edge does GM but they are among the best and so would be a good referral) that will be your best option given what you got now. If you have further questions or concerns as you decide what to do, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic because we want you to make the most of your repair dollars and help you get the best possible results.
