2013 Ford Explorer limited 180,000 miles brand new battery and alternator. Lights on dash went crazy, engine revved then slowed then bucked, all lights went off and it died. Replaced the alternator and all worked fine. 1 week later sitting at a light the car revved up, the engine shimmied, all the lights lit up and then it just died. Started right back up. Has now done this a second time. Could this be an issue from the new alternator or possibly the computer chip going bad?
My car has 180000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Check for stored OBD-II trouble codes. Your issue is not likely to be related to the alternator/charging circuit. If engine speed went up uncommanded, that points more toward a malfunctioning engine sensor or engine controls. As far as the PCM (engine computer), on diagnostic decision trees in the factory service manual that is actually the least likely (last resort) component to be a cause of engine trouble. To have something like this investigated, you can request a Check Engine Light diagnostic and the mechanic will check for stored trouble codes and also apply a real time scanner to see if there are any obvious indications of out of range sensors. For example, if the oxygen sensors have never been replaced on this vehicle, the waveform output should be checked (or better yet, the oxygen sensors should just be replaced outright) and other basic parameters such as fuel trim should be looked at on a scan tool to determine the basic operating condition of the engine.
