If it stopped accelerating then you most likely have internal engine damage. Since the heater was not blowing hot, that indicates that the coolant was low. You will have to refill the cooling system and pressure test it to see where the leak is coming from. Since you likely have an internal engine damage you also need to do a compression test and a combustion chamber leak test. This will determine whether or not you have a head gasket failure or a warped head problem from the overheating. My goal is to earn a 5 star rating experience. Do you have any questions? It literally overheated and I pulled right over and my boyfriend came to drive it off the freeway and said he had no issues with it accelerating he drove it off the highway and into parking lot where we parked and have left it the reservoir wasnt low but we couldn't check the neck as it was hot

I understand. The problem is that if the engine starts losing power from overheating, it usually has damaged the engine. Of course this is all speculation so the tests I gave you would be required to determine the actual fault.

when I pulled over I couldn't get the temp gauge to come down at all he said though that when he drove it off the highway that it went all the way hot & then came down some & then went up that it was jumping up & down

Yes you will have to test it but it sounds like the head gaskets are blown.
