I can't get my key to turn in the ignition. We have tried jiggling the [steering wheel](/topics-steering-wheel-nissan/) and it is in a locked position and we are having no luck. Mechanic's Assistant: Have you applied constant pressure to the steering wheel while turning the key in the ignition? What type of pressure. To the left or to the right? Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? 2005 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Altima yourself? What have you tried so far? Automatic transmission. Hello Patty, Nice to meet you!

Hello!
Automotive Expert
I am sorry to hear that you are having issues turning your key in the ignition. I will do my best to help you with this.

Thank you. We've already tried jiggling the steering wheel. It's in lock position and we're having no luck.
Automotive Expert
First I would like you to try this.... Turn the steering wheel to the Right slowly and you may need to use some force.. and while doing that, try turning the key. If it doesn't work to the right, then try the left and let me know

Didn't work.

Is the car parked on a hill? Flat ground? Are you home? Are you out somewhere?

I'm home. It's on a very slight decline with the front facing downward.
Automotive Expert
Is it next to a curb? Are the wheels turned or touching a curb or anything?

It is not near a curb. The wheels are straight and the steering wheel is turned slightly left
Automotive Expert
So, Let me explain the steering lock operation to you, as it may help you .

Okay.
Automotive Expert
So the steering column has a open slot in it. When the Ignition is off, the it a lock on the ignition cylinder. Very similar to a dead bolt on a front door. So when you turn the wheel, the dead bolt would lock into that open slot on the column. So just like a front door that may be out of adjustment, when you try to lock a door how you may push or pull or lift to get the dead bolt to lock the dooor. So your ignition works the same way. You need to simply move the wheel and find that sweet spot to allow the key to turn so the dead bolt part of the ignition cylinder cab retract. The next step if you can't get it to release would be to raise the nose of the car so there is no pressure on the steering system to release the key Do you understand?

I do. You mean we should try to jack up the car to see if that will release the steering lock?
Automotive Expert
If you feel you can do that. But both front wheels would have to be off the ground. That is the only other way. If that doesn't work, the it would need to be towed to have the ignition checked to see why it's no releasing.

Thanks for your help

What others are asking

central locking system, locks, actuator, motor assembly, door
The ones that aren't working, you've got to push or pull. The actuator (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-door-lock-actuator) on those doors probably went out. It is a little motor assembly. When you find out how much those stupid little electronic motor assemblies cost, you'll...
Starter turning over without cranking
Hello. Two common component failures that will cause the conditions you've described are a faulty fuel pump relay (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-fuel-pump-relay) or a crank position sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-crankshaft-position-sensor). Both parts have the potential to fail intermittently when they become hot. But when they...
My car overheats and drinks lots of water.
If the vehicle is loosing coolant without any external leaks then you may have a blown head gasket. I'd suggest having the system pressure tested to see if an external or internal leak is found or if there is another...
Car wont run in D at first, need to start in second or first gear.
This may be related to a few different issues such as a faulty shift solenoid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/shift-interlock-solenoid-replacement) or failing torque converter in your transmission. When either of these happen and too much torque is applied (i.e. starting in 1st gear), this...
Po 301
P0301 (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0301-obd-ii-trouble-code-cylinder-1-misfire-detected-by-jamahl-walker) is a misfire in number one cylinder. I believe you are already aware of this. A common problem on these is the injector assembly. I would do everything below before I condemn it. If I were there in...
Can grease viscosity lead to engine failure?
Assuming you are referring to the engine motor oil, this is not likely something that would cause an engine to fail instantly. As you may know, the motor oil is what lubricates all of the moving parts inside your engine....
My truck won't shift out of first gear.
This may be a sign of low transmission fluid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-fluid-service) or a faulty transmission control solenoid. As you know, automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears. Every time a gear change is required, the car's computer activates a...
I have a stutter when I am driving
The stutter, or vibration, could be due to an engine management (tuning) issue or is possibly caused by worn motor mounts that are allowing engine vibration to transfer to the body when the engine is under load. To evaluate the...
