OK, since it goes into reverse, the fluid and filter must be good due to the high demand of pressure to apply reverse.
There are clutches for forward gears that sound like they have failed either being worn out, seals bad or the piston is bad.
This is not an easy fix. The transmission will have to be removed and inspected for the failure and either be rebuilt or replaced.

you think it’s something to do with the transmission and not electrical? i didn’t smell burning, didn’t hear any clanking, i was just going about 45 mph and it just felt like the transmission popped itself into neutral. car didn’t jerk or anything. i changed the fluid and filter yesterday and still the same thing.

Going into forward and reverse is mechanical, not electrical. Shifting is electrically controlled but not application of drive or reverse.

you wouldn’t suggest changing out the solenoids or anything electrical?when i took the transmission pan off i didn’t see any teeth or broken pieces. i could tell though that the fluid hasn’t been changed because it was straight black. also when i first took it out i smelt a burning smell for a few seconds

No to the solenoids as they control shifting.
The bad fluid indicates the clutches were burning up.
That would confirm the clutch failure.

alright do you have an estimate on how much it’d be to do a rebuild?

A rebuild would be around 1800-2200 depending on parts needed.
A used one would be around 1200-1500.

Still not sure what you need?
Have a certified mobile mechanic diagnose what's wrong with your car, at your home or office.
This is somewhat common for cold weather as the fluid in the pump when cold is much thicker and does not flow quite as well as it does once it is warmed up. One fix you may try might be...
Hi there. The issue that you are having is the lower control arm bushings are worn out and dried up. I recommend replacing the lower control arm bushings on both sides on the front of the vehicle. The rubber becomes...
The Hall effect pick-up assembly in the distributor can be tested via the Factory Service Manual but that procedure has more than 15 steps. A more efficient test method is to use a self powered “indicator light” that is made...
The most obvious possibility is damage to the CV joint during control arm replacement. In your application, the CV joint and boot will be impacted unless precautions are taken when the ball joint is separated from the steering knuckle. Indeed,...
If the check engine light is not flashing it is OK to drive the car with the particular code you have noted during the limited interval you are describing. A flashing check engine light would signify constant misfiring and you...
If the car is still overheating, even after filling the coolant system (and making sure there is no trapped air, which itself will cause overheating) just request an overheating diagnostic (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-overheating-inspection) during which a certified mechanic will determine which of...
Hi Carlos. Thanks for contacting us tonight. Generally speaking, when this type of error occurs, it's due to a throttle control sensor or electronic throttle control system failure. It's also possible that a fuel system component might be excessively dirty...
Hi Charlie. Thanks for contacting us today. There are two possibilities; that the e-brake is stuck on the rear brake itself, or the cable has broken. If you live in an area where you drive in dirt or off-road frequently,...
If you have the 2.0L engine, and are changing both the filter and the oil, add 6.3 quarts of oil. All other engines on this model, that is the 2.4L and the 2.5L, require 5.0 quarts if you are changing...
